The point is you jumped immediately to the most cynical, profit minded motive, which makes no goddamn sense in the context of everything about the show.

Why the hell would you think the main motivation of adding this character is "SHE'LL SELL A LOT OF FIGURES" and not "We need her in order to tell the story"? Its nuts and makes no goddamn sense at all.

Also, in the new poster, Homura has her old spoiler[timeline resetting weapon, instead of the bow she has in the series' final timeline]. I'm guessing then, that this film will explore multiple timelines as well.

That's a HUGE misconception in the story. According to an interview with one of the creators (I forgot which--I think it was in the guidebook), spoiler[Homura was created with the bow and arrow in mind (as shown in her default character design), but it wasn't that powerful at all, so she used other weapons instead. Unless she can shoot purple beams out of her guns, it's likely that the purple beams being shot at Kyuubey in the beginning of the series came from that bow. I think Urobuchi was the one who said something like, "I never intended for people to get the idea that she got the bow later on." And, of course, her powers rely on her time magic, so she still has the shield. Throughout the series, it would disappear on her wrist, so I'm sure she only has it out when she needs it.]

Except that wasn't spoiler[the bow Madoka's weapon]? In each of the spoiler[timelines where Madoka became a Magical Girl, the pink bow was her weapon]. So the only way I can see that making sense was that Homura spoiler[having that bow as well is symbolic of her wish revolving Madoka, such as Sayaka having faster healing capabilities due to her wish being to heal Kyosuke, or Kyoko originally having an illusion ability due to her wish being for people to listen to her father].

It sure would be great if Yen Press could translate those guidebooks. My only annoyance with this series is just how much of it has been left out, only mentioned in supplementary material.

Anime is like that, it's a cynical industry that's ever looking for more profit. Stuff that sells gets more made of it, regardless of anything, so yes, my opinion on this aspect makes perfect sense if you ask me. I was just voicing a concern, not saying it definitely has to be like that. You obviously didn't read the post previous to that one

I share your torn feelings. While I'm not a fan of the ending, it wrapped everything up and I'm worried this is just a way to milk more cash from the cow and that it won't be half as good as the original

I'll put it down in simple words for you: I hope this story stays true to the original and its intention? yes, but I think both you and I know enough about how the world works to at least be slightly weary about it. It wouldn't be the first time a franchise got extended/a new character invented just for the sake of selling (I already cited Eva's Mari who's done nothing in the two movies she's been in).

So you can stop already with your defensieve attitude like you still believe in unicorns and that everything that gets made is for the love of art rather than the love of money. Once again, I'm not saying it's necessarily going to be like that, just that I hope it doesn't

According to the part in the guidebook here, in the section where they interview the character designer, she says that spoiler[Homura's bow and Mami's guns came from her initial design while Madoka's bow actually appeared later. My guess what that Madoka's "staff" was meant to stay a staff, since all the character art from Aoki Ume before the actual making of the anime had her with the staff rather than her bow (which ends up turning into her bow in the anime, so it's not inconsistent). I'm guessing the finalized version hints that Homura's bow does come as a result of her connection to Madoka, but I'll have to try and find where I read where she always had the bow and just never used it. The anime kinda hints that she didn't have anything but time-control and bombs until the group asked her if she had better weapons, but... if I can find it, I'll share it.]

And yeah. It's a shame. There's so much to be found... :/

[EDIT] Okay. I still feel like I read what I said before somewhere, but here's some insight from "The Beginning Story" (the manuscript that the anime was actually based off of, which some changes from here to the final product) that actually supports your suggestion (translated by me):

Quote:
髪型に加えて、武装も盾から弓に変わっている。(時間静止能力はなし)

"Putting aside the hairstyle [accessory] change, her weapon has changed from a shield to a bow. (She has no time stop powers)"

So you may be right. I'm going to keep looking anyway, since I've yet to actually read this in its entirety (it's loooooong).

Well, here's the thing. From the Kirara magazine serializations, we know how the movies were conceived, and it kinda shows that ALL of you are right. That is, Urobuchi didn't PLAN a sequel, but was asked to write one after Madoka's popularity (so it's obviously been conceived as a money-maker by those who requested he make a sequel). He told them he was going to think on it because he wasn't sure he could write something good enough to live up to his original idea, but when watching the first finalized version on television, the idea hit him and he contacted them to say he knew what to write. It was SUPPOSED to be a full-fledged TV sequel, but the story was too short for a full 12-13 episode series, so they turned it into a film.
If you ask me, it sounds like they're going to be going down the same road as the anime and try and stick to what's important in the story, rather than just extend it for the sake of adding in characters who do nothing to the value of the story just for extra figures.

[EDIT2] According to a recent interview in the september Newtype this year (just before the new girl was introduced), it seems Urobuchi added that the idea also came from a concept that Shinbo gave him while the original series was broadcasting, too. And the storyboard he gave them was an hour and a half, but they added 30 minutes to help flesh it out. Despite that, the movie is compacted to the storyboard and Urobuchi suggests that "if there were a 6th magical girl" (the question asked this), he is sure the entire situation would change. So I think we don't have to worry about the girl doing nothing to the series--assuming we can trust his words.

I feel like the only person who's known about this person's existence (at least, in Magical Girl form) since I watched the trailer after the second movie in theaters in Japan. I recently took a picture of the Blu-Ray's clearer release to show a friend (sorry for the big size):

[EDIT]Wait. This girl in my picture has short hair and different kinds of pigtails/buns...
Are there more? ._.

The girl's silhouette appears to be wearing a snow-cap (the kind with the dangly ties)

Exactly. So where's the rest of her hair from this new character design? None of the characters except spoiler[Ultimate Madoka] ever change their hair style/length in Magical Girl form, so I'm really curious...

Based on new movie footage that's on YouTube now, actually the design you shared and the new girl ARE one in the same.

Yup. I JUST saw it. She has the hat and everything in the new footage. Also, there are new enemies called spoiler["Nightmares" that are doll-based and are animated by Inu-curry (thus, they look no different than witches to me)] and, just like what was speculated by a really blurry screenshot from the poster, there IS a scene with spoiler[Mami holding a doll that looks like Charlotte. And indeed, Kyouko is wearing a Mitakihara school uniform and walking to school with the group. And Madoka is with them. And there's another scene with Madoka braiding Homura's hair again]...

Add that to Urobuchi and Shinbo's unintentional hype/excitement in the interview I just linked to above and I'm actually really trusting that the movie will be good. Not that it matters until I watch it myself. =P
