Obviously, Needless isn't loved by anyone

It's liked by plenty of people, we just don't feel like getting into pointless arguments about it on a site that would never hold it in favor in the first place. Wink

Correct word is "pantsu" XP

Haven't seen K-ON, but from experience and what I've heard, I expect it to be an overhyped cynical assemblage.

I like Chobits. It's the best of the CLAMP shows I've seen, though I too wasn't satisfied with the ending. The Pygmalion reference seems correct, and was probably part of the inspiration.

Erin's verdict in this case seems founded on an instant dislike, which then twisted every part of the show into an instance of "bad". The dislike seems founded on the sexual politics of the show, but really, sex exists, sexual relationships exist, and very few of us are comfortable with every existing parameter. In this case, what Erin perceived as nothing better than sexual slavery CAN also be seen as the growth of a loving relationship. There are plenty of real-life relationships in which one partner is mentor to the other, and arguably this is not necessarily unwholesome.

For myself, I find the show charming. The two main characters are both complete innocents (porn collection not withstanding), which is important in making the story palettable and frequently comic. The people around them guide and protect them in their guilelessness, which is also a nice element.

The fanservice elements have to be taken as a ubiquitous but not essential anime element (just as collectors of neo-classical art have to accept that their paintings are full of T & A). The harem fantasies definitely seem kluged onto the show artificially, but are funny in their deliberate disparity from the girls' coy real-life personalities, and of course the remorseless mocking of Hideki's countrified innocence (which is more personality than most harem protagonists are granted). There is nothing nasty in the tone of all this.

The chief problem with the show (apart from the ending) is the notion that Chi could acquire a complete personality in such a short time, or else have a definite personality despite being devoid of memories.
There is also the existential dilemma which Futurama best summed up as "Don't date robots!" - i.e. the legitimacy of emotionally bonding to an artificially created personality.
But these are not insurmountable obstacles - this is, after all, a fantasy.

BTW, I quite liked what I've seen of DearS (though of course I have a slight problem with the whole "slave" thing!). Awesome soundtrack. Shame it's out of print. I would buy a reasonably priced copy.

Chobits perishable? Rental maybe, but perishable...? ok......wut?

Trick with CLAMP is the many layers of plot madness (there are many sub-plots, ya know). Yet, the whole point of the show, despite how big of a perv Hideki is, in the end he accepts Chi in a relationship of pure and chaste love.
...the manga delves deeper but the anime is still a good watch.

I honestly prefer Tokyo Babylon as my favorite CLAMP series (even though we only have crappy OVA and a bizarre live-action movie-hahaha), but Chobits is actually one of their good works.

Well, that's my two cents.

I disagree wholly with Needless. It is one of the series I enjoy the most at the moment. I think it is dynamic and over the top. I have a few complaints, though; I agree the end credits are... disturbing. Especially during the first few episodes, before the Girls Squad is introduced... you wonder why they show naked schoolgirls who are not even part of the show (at that point).

Cruz/Yamada is an annoying character. Finally, the setting is a bit boring - wastelands and more wastelands. And ruined cities.

Aside from that, I literally LOL at some jokes, and enjoy the violence and gratuitous fanservice (BTW, while the mentionned young girl is part of the fanservice, msot comes from women with... interesting attire - see the lady with Psychokinesis - cant remember the name).

I suspect the incest in Tale of the Genji continues to influence manga a great deal to this day.

Actually, you can trace it back further - Japan's creation gods, according to the Shinto text The Kojiki were twins who got married and gave birth to all the other gods. I've always suspected that to be at the root of the incest themes in Japanese literature. The Tale of Genji is an awesome read, by the way. One of my all-time favorite books. Naomi is also good.

While I'm jabbering on about books, a science fiction fan once told me that "science fiction" is the prophetic, hardcore stuff like Brave New Worldor 1984 with believable science and a real possibility of coming true, while "sci fi" is the space opera type of story, like Star Trek or Babylon 5. *shrug* Just throwing it out there; I'm a swords-and-sorcery girl myself.

Incidentally, I agree with the Chobits rating. I enjoyed the manga, but found the anime quite dull.

It's funny I don't like moe much either but K-On! like Haruhi has become an exception. I don't know maybe I'm just a sucker for the whole band element as I'm such a big music person. Like Haruhi it's also just a fun show and I don't feel feel creepy watching it and don't feel there's anything sinister about it (at least not intentionally).

I also agree in regards to Chobits, though in this case its more a case of being "meh" then "eww". Like you said my problem with Chobits is more that it's "boring and unfunny" then anything else. I watched Chobits back in the day when the singles were coming out but dropped it pretty early on.

I really want to go back and watch the english dub, I bet its hilarious.

I'm still scratching my head over how it got licensed. I remember watching it 2 years ago, seeing that ending and then losing any hope of it ever being release here. Guess I was wrong.

And lol @ people still angry over Chobits.

Hey Ms. Erin, you should definetly check out "DearS". Its out of print, but still very easy to find and very cheap. Its like Chobits except that its way better, campy, goofy and silly.

Wow I saw the topic at 8 pages but very little comments on my favorite part Shelf Obsessed, or what I prefer to call What's on People's Shelves. GroManu I had to do a double-take, vaulted Ceilings are my favorite, I saw the size of the wallscrolls compared to the wall and it's taller than my place, so jealous. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, I wish more collections had this great series, it was one of my last purchases on VHS. So glad you had Vivi and Zidane displayed, I haven't worked up the courage to open my figures. I wish I had more manga to display myself but most of the ones I have are the ones that come bundled with DVDs. I really like seeing the packaging of anime released outside the US. Cloud and Sephiroth of course is a real cool set, if you couldn't tell by now I like the Final Fantasy {Bad grammar intentional, need to be said with an accent}. Also I really liked the landscape Princess Mononoke wallscroll, now I need to track down one of those until it comes out on Blu-Ray. Kudos to The GroManu, superb collection and display, one day I need to upload my collection but my anime is integrated with my live-action and dust everything off of course.

I guess I'll address the dialog on the reviews, I personally like Erin Finnegan's reviews because they steer me into buying/not buying some shows. I don't always agree with the reviews and sometimes Erin's negatives are actually what sells me on some shows. Chobits and K-On I'll probably pass on but Needless may get a borrow if my friend buys it.

uh no just no

Also if it's campy (which it's not), than you don't need to tell me it's goofy and silly

What are ya talking about?! That ending was awesome! N. American animation should start doing that! Laughing

Really now?! Laughing
