Mainstream movies and TV are usually pretty un-fetishy, but people tend to forget that "live-action" also encompasses, y'know... porn. Literal porn. There's quite a lot of it, and it apparently gets pretty disturbing at times, yet somehow the whole field of live-action media isn't tainted by it.

One reason why anime seems so abnormally smutty is because we, as a community, tend to group it all together in one big chunk. We talk about "dropping" shows rather than picking them up, because you're supposed to try everything that comes out; and even if you don't, you'll probably hear about nearly every show if you keep up with current anime at all. Live-action naughty stuff is hidden away in porn sites and shady movie theaters, so we don't think about it as much, and don't feel like it has any connection to the cleaner stuff.

Beyond that, I think most of the complaints about fanservice are just overreaction. Plenty of Western movies have swimsuit scenes and skintight-suited babes and such, but there's less fuss about it. Shocking or smutty things always seem worse when they're in a new or unusual type of media. Hentai somehow has a worse reputation than "normal" porn, but it's hard to imagine how there can be any meaningful difference (if anything, hentai is less exploitative). Early TV shows couldn't even show a husband and wife in the same bed, and while none of us are that puritanistic, a little of that knee-jerk tendency seems to be built into everyone.

Eroticness will continue to influence almost everything until the day we're all uploaded into robots (and probably even then, honestly). People need to stop pretending it doesn't exist so we can actually make judgements about it and stop this polarized argument of "it's bad, it ruins everything, you're all perverts" vs. "sexy is great, everything sexy is good, you're just a prude."

@Ohoni You completely skirted over the issue that a ****load of people seem to think the string is designed to hold the boobs up.

Profanity aside, a "load" of people believe in Bigfoot too, that doesn't mean he's real. A quantity of stupid people never adds up to truth, you need basic facts for that. A "load" of people, apparently at least a few dozen, seem to have reached the conclusion that her ribbon was intended to be load bearing, without any evidence to support that conclusion. That does not mean that any of them were correct, or that it was the fault of the design team that they leaped to an unfounded conclusion.

but you can't really apply your Occam's Razor when a majority of the public is obviously reaching the opposite conclusion.

And nor do you seem to understand what "majority" means.

^I haven't conducted a worldwide survey on the issue, but the overwhelming majority of people in this thread and all of the examples on the article don't agree with your Occam's Razor. I'm sorry that I can't provide a larger sample for an objective study on exactly how many people think the string is supposed to hold the boobs up and how many don't.

Funny how you're apparently bothered by profanity but then proceed to insinuate that people who don't agree with your opinion of what the boob string is supposed to do are all stupid. Stay coherent. Wink

I'm dropping the issue here. I've already written like 500 words too many on the topic of an ugly boob string. May this thread go back to being about harmlessly funny girls trying and failing to replicate unlikely anime boob fashion.

Oh that was a joke? Better luck next time. Maybe with less passive aggression, then people would actually take it as a joke.

In this part of the second episode you can clearly see that the string is lifting the breasts, though I do agree that this isn't the case in all scenes, therefore it is inconsistent.

Oh wait

One of the biggest flaws I see some designers do is try to make things practical rather than looking good. If you want realism, don't look to fictional media for it. A good design trumps any argument of practicality.

Implying this is anywhere near a good design.

Also, look to WMT shows for good yet realistic character design.

Because realism is sooo important in those Chinese girl cartoons rigth?

Oh wait..

Fans like this are why anime is mostly shitty nowadays.

Ha, that's a good one, since this is practically SAO 2.0 Electric Boogaloo.

and why hasn't animation as a whole been taken seriously in the west? because the content has always been focused more on child fare and little else. we can thank disney for warping people's perceptions of the medium. clearly, they managed to get into your head. on the opposite end of the spectrum, we have anime which had the potential to change people's mentality towards animation. in some ways it has, but the notable works which should have set an example for all to follow are limited in number, sadly. the bulk of the industry is focused more on mediocrity and catering people such as yourself... people with little respect for the art form. the stereotypes of anime aren't really stereotypes any longer because so much of the trash that comes out of the anime industry is actually reflective of it now.

just so we are clear: animation as a whole is mainstream and so is anime. it just isn't taken seriously partly due to the reasons mentioned. look at how people respond to superhero movies in the west? despite the ridiculous premises they all share, the producers are respectful to the audience and don't pander to social misfits and perverted teens with disgusting fetishes. maybe that has something to do with it?

the comments i have seen on this topic alone speak for themselves. they demonstrate just how backwards and immature a large part of the anime community actually is. not only is it not enough to get off on their precious anime in the privacy of their own home, but they need the entire world to know about. it needs to be on the front page of ann to validate everything they believe in. it's sad, really. no wonder all the true artists within the industry have already given up hope for a prosperous future.

and what happened with video games? what is the point you are trying to make? we are in the middle of a renaissance with the rise of the indie scene. there are more artistic and thoughtful games than ever for people to enjoy. it is games like journey that allow the terms "video games" and "art" to be put in the same sentence.

nobody here has brought up the word censorship. i couldn't care less if this stupid anime exists and cosplayers show up at conventions with strings to elevate their breasts. the whole point is, trashy news shouldn't be given priority and moved to the forefront. it doesn't deserve the spotlight nor has it earned it. all this does is tarnish the image of anime even further than its current state. it is further enforcing all the negative sides of the industry instead of showing its strengths. let us give people reasons to respect anime, rather than reasons to point and laugh at it.

Here are several question for you:

Why do you care about anime's reputation? So what if people laugh? So what if they don't take animation seriously? Why are you taking it upon yourself to turn anime into something that you envision it to be? Who are you to decide what anime should or should not be? Not to mention, why do you believe that stories such as this highlight the negative aspects of anime? Are not not just taking the elitist moral high ground here in deciding what's best for people, people whom you've deemed "backwards and immature"? You used the phrase "people with little respect for the art form". What do you define as respect? Producing only the works that you deem to be of a good enough quality and adhering to your criteria?

You have to realize that those are your own arbitrary values that you've imposed and assigned onto the animation industry and its fans. In my opinion, the fun and openness of anime is indeed one of its strengths and the pandering is part of what gives anime its identity. Also, the reason comics and cartoons are so child-oriented in America is mainly because of the Comics Code Authority created in 1954. Do check that out.

Wow, 80+ comments in a thread about an otherwise completely forgettable ecchi fantasy series that people will likely stop caring about by the end of the season.

That being said, the author must be awfully proud of the fact that his dumb little idea provoked so much discussion.

All of you otabros giving your all to have transparently defensive overreactions are contributing meaningfully to the already abundant laughter from this story. You didn’t have to, there’s no good reason for it and nothing you’ve said really makes sense, but you went above and beyond the call of duty. We thank you for your service.

Maybe the string would really be better for a man. I’ll be there’re a lot of men out there watching this show who could really use some support, but are too manly to wear a bra.

I’d test it myself, but alas, my tits aren’t what they were when I was younger.

lol.
Is that how you react to people disagreeing with you?
You must be fun at parties

Good to know the people who love jiggly Chinese cartoon boobs have the smallest modicum of sense of humor. Jesus.

I want to make 2 things clear.

-You don't know what jokes are, because you clearly did not make one, although I admit, that is funny by itself.
-I never said I loved Anime boobs, and I don't.

Forgot people got all touchy and panties on fire over any attempt at dismissive humor about cartoon tits

Coming from the person getting all worked up over a goddness(so not human) wearing some silly string, lol.

After all this fuss, I thought I would take a look at the original novel. In the beginning the author has Bell describe her as having long twin tales held in place by ribbons. Her out fit is not otherwise described. I didn't reread the whole thing but I don't think I remember any discussion of the ribbon at all.

The main character does say that as a goddess she will never change in appearance. This would imply that since her breasts were not sagging when she first manifest in this form they never will.

Looking at the illustrations, the cover does show the ribbon. It also shows her as bare foot and wearing long gloves. The entire outfit is long on cute and short on practical. The interior illustrations do not consistently show the ribbon. Apparently it is an optional part of the outfit. Just inside is a fold out poster. If cosplayers are having problems with Hestia's outfit, they will go crazy trying to do Freya's clothing. Shocked Looking at Freya's outfit, I would say that it provides support for the idea that goddesses do not need support.

So this now news hm? The sumō version is a 11/10 though and i don´t think that these are "fans". The Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? manga is a generic harem animu sleeping pill so i gave it a 4/10 and moved on.
Read Dungeon Meshi 8/10 and Spirit Migration 7,5/10 (which is even a harem) instead.
Even Re:Monster 7/10 has it´s own Byronic charm and he has as many women as i fingers Wink.
Anime when?
