I was watching a Let's Play of Pokemon FireRed, done by a man who had never played a Pokemon game before, who instituted a "no spoiler" policy in chat. He couldn't understand why everyone was telling him to level up a Magikarp, and was legitimately astonished when it evolved.

Very fun and uplifting song!  Even as a weak Pokémon with almost no way of holding its own in battle, I have a soft spot for Magikarp.

I don't remember well, but doesn't Magikarp at least know Tackle?

He gets it at Level 15, but his base attack stats are pretty pathetic, so at that point it's usually just better to grind him up to Level 20.

In addition, Magikarp also learns Flail at Level 30, if you're interested in raising it past its Evolution level unevolved.
