Oh yeah, I really like this manga and its version of "hot yandere guy" and the changing relationship with the female lead. I like the MC as well a lot, she's tough and fun.

I remember reading the first volume and thinking it felt a lot like a Korean webtoon. Maybe just the way the characters are drawn.
I also remember this one having a curious manga-ka note in the afterword, where she explained she was specifically inspired by Hollywood/Western yakuza films for this manga. Which I'm still confused by, because there's like a hundred million Japanese yakuza films, and I literally can't name a single Western one. (I'm sure a few exist? But still...) |

Her previous 2 vol Haru no Noroi would make for a good film. Maybe one day.
The manga stars a woman, is written by a woman, is a romance manga (and other things) and the art even sexualizes the men but runs in a Seinen mag. You could publish it as is as in a Josei mag but there is no way it would have gotten exposure or an animated adaptation that way. Sydney Pollack indeed made a Yakuza flick before it was cool in 1973. Released the same year as Battles Without Honor and Humanity so he really was on the pulse of the time back then. 1993´s Rising Sun is another, released right as Japan took its tumble. The novel´s author Michael Crichton himself wrote that racist script. Films and books from the Japanese buying spree of the 80s to early 90s are something else and Black Rain was a BIG deal in Japan. The film is what it is but the cinematography and the score are an 11/10. The film is also Yusaku Matsuda's final role (Spike, Kuzan and Kenshiro are based on him) so it will never be forgotten. The manga has a certain US "prestige TV" vibe to it, I can see it. |
