Crunchyroll never cared about promoting anime in India until Sony bought it, I guess these guys realized there's a big consumer base here. I wonder what were they thinking back in Funimation era, that thing never became accessible in the country during it's entire run.

This is just conjecture on my part but I think it's because Sony already has a big market presence in Indian media, so they were better equipped to launch the service in the country. They have been licensing media and making original content for the Indian market for decades so they not only have access to consumer behavior data but also have relationships with licensors all over Asia.
