Looks like a strong follow up to Remake!

"Decide Aerith's fate" - Feels like deliberate wording, as deliberate as using Tifa to show Cloud out on a date.

Original Final Fantasy 7 game is wonderful because of many, many things.

Not being able to save Aerith isn't one of them.

Not to go all fanboy, but this looks amazing. Yakuza and Persona 3 may have competition.

I mean, that was the entire point considering FFVII is a mass dismantling of 90s RPG stories. It had to happen for the story to have the weight it did

One of the main themes of FFVII was trying to teach people how to accept the permanence of loss and death. Bringing Aerith back would be a fundamental rejection of what the original was about.

It isn't a "wrong" answer if the remake wants to be a deconstruction of the original's themes instead of repeating the same message, but I think it's important to understand how far removed from the messages of the original it would be if Aerith is saved.

This is also reply to @MagicianMan.

First, I will say that I was never one of those people who were at the time seeking some almost mythical ways, like cheats, or secret sidequests, to revive her.

And while her death was emotional, Aerith was never THAT irreplaceable to me.

That said, its meaning aside, in that one aspect, FF7 shouldn't have forgotten that it is a game, first and foremost.

Just like with Nanami in Suikoden 2, or Meryl in MGS, I think FF7 would have been a much better game if it allowed us to save Aerith, in other words to have two paths, and one of them being with her alive for the rest of the story.

In these remakes though, I do hope there will be such possibility.

Therein lies the problem though: that's not deconstruction, that's just changing a story because the original's theme made somebody squeamish (and make no mistake, they absolutely make some uncomfortable as was the point). And it's not just Aerith either, that entire game is filled with deaths that are done as frank as possible. There are no last good-byes, no heroic sacrifices, no glorious last stands, no final showdowns, people just die. And it thoroughly interrogates its cast as well, often questioning certain aspects of their motivations and taking them to task. It's not a game about easy answers or truths. Even the ending isn't something that the audience wanted, it was the one they needed. Otherwise it wouldn't have had the impact it did.

Headline takeway: chocobos look really fun to roam around the world in, chocobo racing looks fun, too.

Also, it's been a while since I played the original game, but my recollection is that the Temple of the Ancients was as the end of Disc 1, and marked about the 40% mark of the main story. Which, on the face of it, would seem to indicate a fairly rushed conclusion, if they're really going to be able to exert enough self-control to keep this series to just three games.

I'm a bit worried that they'll wind up cutting the whole.... well, entire character arc for Cloud. It was easily one of the best parts of the original game -- if not the best part -- but as the aborted CoFFVII demonstrated (or indicated) Square-Enix seems to vastly prefer the much more self-serious and standoffish version of Cloud from the beginning of the game.

Or maybe that's just smart marketing given the statistic we have now showing just how few players actually make it to the final credits -- of any game.

I think there's an argument to be made (and plenty of folks have made it elsewhere, that's for sure) that the Remake project has already rejected some of the fundamental themes of the original. So... that ship may already be sailed.

I'm not entirely sure what to expect from Rebirth, myself, but I'm definitely not expecting much thematic fidelity to the original game. Hell, I'm not sure I should even expect much in the way of thematic coherence.

But the world looks like it'll be fun to explore, with a lot of side-content, and I suspect that the more time that can be spent ignoring the main story, the more enjoyable the game will be for me. Especially since I've never, personally, gotten much mileage out of the overproduced, overchoreographed action sequences that tend to define the various FFVII sequel projects.

Like that whole motorcycle sequence in the first VII-R nearly put me to sleep.
