1st Madoka Magica Film Earns US$1.7 Million in 1st Weekend

According to the movie data website Box Office Mojo, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings grossed the equivalent of over US$1.7 million in its opening weekend. It accumulated 139,753,806 yen (about US$1,789,883) on 43 screens, placing it at #7 behind two other animated films, The Mystical Laws (#5) and The Lorax (#6).
The Mystical Laws played on 208 screens, while The Lorax played on 528 screens. The first Madoka Magica film brought in an average of 3,250,074 yen (US$41,318) at each screen showing it.
The second film, Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica Kōhen: Eien no Monogatari (Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal), will open in Japan this Saturday.
The first two Madoka Magica films will start screening in U.S. theaters on October 19 and 20.
