The Yōkai Watch: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan! (Yo-kai Watch: The Movie: It's the Secret of Birth, Meow!) anime film's box office intake topped 5 billion yen (about US$42 million) this past weekend.
However, the movie data firm Kōgyō Tsūshin reported on Monday that the film dropped to #2 this weekend, behind Disney's Big Hero 6, which has topped 4 billion yen (about US$33 million) total.
The two films both opened on December 20. The Yōkai Watch film earned 1,628,893,000 yen (about US$13.58 million) on 408 screens in its opening weekend and broke Howl's Moving Castle's record for the highest-grossing opening weekend of any Japanese film. Big Hero 6 (titled Baymax in Japan) earned 600,410,500 yen (about US$5 million) on 540 screens.
The live-action film of Io Sakisaka's Blue Spring Ride (Ao Haru Ride) romance manga dropped from #3 to #4 in its fourth weekend, Parasyte rose from #7 to #6 in its sixth weekend, THE LAST -NARUTO THE MOVIE- dropped from #6 to #7 in its fifth weekend, the live-action Princess Jellyfish (Kuragehime) film stayed at #9 in its second weekend, and Kamen Rider Gaim x Kamen Rider Drive Yoroi Movie: Daisen Full Throttle rose from #11 to #10 in its fourth weekend.
