Uh, Lupin III fans have been promoting the francise ever since the fansubs, the Encyclopedia, Mailing List and the message board came into being. It's just that the R1 companies themselves did little to nothing to help Lupin sell here. Geneon chose to continue to release the red jacket series in singles, even after the format became financially unviable here. Effumation did a shit job on its dubs and trailers(TM) for the Lupin specials, and most people did not even know they were in stores. Tokyopop was the only company willing to connect the manga with the anime, but no anime licensor seemed to be willing to cross-promote the manga in the same way. The only reason American fan interest in Lupin has really perked up in recent years is because of Fujiko. But that's fine by me. Fujiko, and probably Kids on the Slope, have clearly benefited from the success of Mad Men, because, until then, literally no one was watching shows and movies based in "old" urban settings outside of Saving Private Ryan. That was always a strike against Lupin, too. Didn't matter if it was one of the newer editions, younger viewers did not like the fact that it was based off an "old" property. Bond could get away with that, because it is an action franchise, first and foremost, even if it clearly still revels in trappings of its older incarnations. Lupin is a comedy franchise with occasional action elements.
Still, for people to support Lupin even after the end of the anime bubble shows just how dedicated its fanbase is. OTOH, do Conan fans even try to build more buzz and sales for their series? Brian is certainly right on that one. If you do not pay up, then they got no incentive to pursue more of what you like. Although, sometimes it's not anyone's fault, no matter how much they support their team. [I'm looking at you, a-hole Japanese licensor which kept fans from finishing Yawara. There is no way that show lost money at its price point. Oh, and the lying punks at S'More, too, of course. Also, a lot of Lupin fans are still waiting on Babylon, which TMS is apparenty demanding a bigger ransom for than it's worth. Then there's Big West's bullshit feud with Harmony Gold over the rest of Macross.] neocloud: The only reason we the amount of Conan we did is there's so much more of it out there. Does not mean there is a strong audience for it, though, or FUNi wouldn't have to sell Conan in bulk and massively discounted. The manga makes money for Viz, but FUNi obviously expected the anime to be a hit shonen show in the vein of YYH and DBZ. So I guess, in some ways, it was their 4Kids One Piece screw-up moment. As for why Hikaru No Go didn't do better in the U.S., the characters are boring as hell, and there is no compelling interest in reaching the conclusion. |

Tough issue. This happened to me with xxxHolic - loved the manga and bought the first season of the anime hoping to add my drop to the bucket to support impetus for releasing the whole series. It's lousy when this happens, but if companies just aren't going to take a chance without proof of interest, I don't see what choice we have. I do wonder, however, what sales would be like if they would release the whole shows and people knew they were getting the whole thing.
Also, as briefly mentioned, it's not just anime. As a fan from the original tv airings, I also went as far as I could with Gargoyles, which stopped at Season 2 Part 1 (the creator doesn't consider Season 3 cannon), and used the "notify when released" button on Amazon for Season 2 Part 2. For those too young to know or remember, Gargoyles was a fabulous dark fantasy series produced by Disney with a wonderful voice cast and writing (surprisingly mature for after school fare) in the 90's. I am truly astonished that this didn't sell. Nevertheless, I would urge anyone who's interested after researching it to get the two available sets, go as far as the releases allow, and also hit that notification button. |

I thought they had gotten pressure from TMS to do that? And in the end pleasing the Japanese overlord is better for them than pissing off some pirates. Somehow, I never saw Conan on TV so my opinion on it is vague at best but it does seem that a lot of the die hard fans of it came out only to lament it's passing and not to promote the show while it was being brought over and put out. |

Conan fans don't want more Conan if Funi's treatment is what we get. That's the thing. It's like blaming people why people didn't support 4Kids One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew or Ojamajo Doremi. No one wants to support that version. |

Fun fact: Aki Sora is not a hentai. It's just a story that has lots of sex in it. |

Thanks Brian for answering my "is Media Blasters a zombie question". I'll pre-order my DVDs as soon as they're available.
Oh..... Sorry about that; I thought hentai was anime that has a lot of sex in it. ...wait what? (o_O) |

Not all sex is porn. Though some things really straddle the line. |

All that really matters is if genitals are shown. The Aki Sora OVA was sold in normal stores in Japan since its not 18+ since no genitals were shown.

Wait a minute if the original property owner have the rights why are the mags and companies always calling the shots. There was an article here a week ago specifically saying how the original artist have close to no say on the anime except in really extreme cases. It was always my impression outside of someone like Takahashi or Oda, artist have it even worse in Japan not better.

As far as I can tell, its this pretty much. The difference there is most of the publishers holding these rights are separate from the movie and TV companies while between DC and Marvel they're held by Warner Brothers and Disney respectively, and between them there are links with major TV networks, cable providers, etc. that can get stuff made inside their own system. Problem becomes when the creators want to leave the system, they're unable to take their work with them. Contracts and stuff. Japan seems to run a different habit of leaving ideas with the creator and not passing it off to another. Rights might be a different issue. But all this just means only a few guys get to decide how people can have fun with these ideas. |

Never understood this logic. Funi always puts both the dub and sub versions on their releases. If you don't like one, just switch to the other. And Case Closed/Detective Conan wasn't severely edited like those 4Kids dubs. Just a few name changes, from what I recall. Anyhoo, I remember that I used to watch Case Closed as a kid when it ran on AS. I was about eight or nine, and I was pretty obsessed! I'm sad that I'll probably never be able to own the whole thing. I actually rather like the dub, and while nostalgia's a big factor there it's certainly not the only reason. The name changes are weird, but I heard that the Japanese producers made them do that (if I'm wrong on that, please correct me). As for the acting, some of the extras aren't so great, but I always found that a bit charming and nostalgic, and I think the leads do a great job. Conan's VA in particular was spot-on. |

rheider: Maybe they just hate the Conan dubs in general? If it's the name issues, though, tough. Lupin fans endured him being called Wolf, FFS.

I still can't believe in this day and age we still have dubbing issues when it's been shown that the core target audience don't want "literal" translations or "gag dubs." Either make a straight up translation or don't even bother at all!! |

Detective Conan has been running in LA on OTA channel 18.2 (UTB Hollywood) for a while now. The channel is running the same eps that Funimation subtitled, with what looks like the Funi subtitles, without ever mentioning Funimation in the credits.
This is the link to their current anime lineup http://utbhollywood.com/en/index.php |

Simple answer: there's a difference between a right and a license. A right grants a license which the artist can not (usually) control.
Any works created by the license belong to the company, not the artist.
Japan has one of the best copyright laws on the books, but they're slowly being eroded away. |
