I did literally say "I am in no way trying to imply that straight people can't find gay subtext," but you're free to ignore that if you like.

However, before you try argue cultural differences, or argue that Japanese writers somehow don't notice or care about such things, you should have a look at this.

this podcast is kind of hilarious to listen to with the context of episode 18 reveals. literally every worldbuilding problem regarding the geopolitical and societal structure of the franxx universe is put front and center.
