Sure, it helps, but it's no guarantee when tons of harems fail big time. You've really need to have something with more than just hot girls. For DxD, it's because it's an ecchi action show that's fun to watch. For IS, I have no idea, it just got lucky somehow. But those are pretty much the only examples of harems doing that well.

that well, yes, but at least you can be assured that it will appeal to a certain audience and thus sell well. And popularity with the critics/intellectuals often says even less about succesful sales... see aku no hana for a good example Anime hyper
