Yeah, Devilman was very shocking for its time, but nowadays, it's about on par with the average Garth Ennis title, and those don't even get shrink-wrapped.

They also sell the Corpse Party manga too at B&N from what I can remember. Also I hope we will get the original manga of Violence Jack, Dororon Enma-kun, Mazinger Z and Cutie Honey manga too in the US. More love of classic manga in the US is nice these days.

Now they just need to license Amon: The Darkside of the Devilman |
Yeah, too bad the anime version is screwed out of ever getting licensed because it's Aniplex.

Trust me, it's not the publishers. Most pubs would LOVE to do more classic manga--but the audience hasn't been there. They historically lost money. But I think tides are changing, and hopefully more classics like this will be getting releases! I'm hopeful!

I can only answer the first question, but there will be no censoring. Devilman is Devilman! That said ... I have no idea what was in the fan translation, but expect things to be different.

Seven Seas doesn't censor material, so whatever is in the Japanese volumes is what you'll get. Just a matter of what edition Seven Seas licensed, which hasn't been specified.
Quote: | 2. What are the odds physical bookstores will carry this? Again, because of it's rather adult content, I don't see Barnes & Noble having this on the shelf. I'm fortunate to live in Seattle, where we have a Japanese bookstore with an extensive English manga collection. If they are willing to sell BL manga openly(With cellophane wrappings to seal it), I don't think they will have an issue with this. |
Depends on your location, but I've seen the Monster Girl Encyclopedia at brick & mortar locations. Best practice is to ask your local bookstore to order a copy for you, and that way you're guaranteed a copy when it arrives.

Why would they censor it? Devilman is not hentai, the blood and gore is not much different than the other comics that they sell at book stores like Berserk, Spawn, Watchmen, Punisher Max, Old Man Logan, Corpse Party and The Walking Dead and several others that I meant from before. So gore won't be the issue.

I guess he means by the large amount of F bombs that fans will add in translations. It is common for fan translations to add swearing that don't exist in the original version.

With all the violence and fan service (I'm talking about "To-Love Ru"-levels*) shounen series have, I wonder when the line is drawn for a manga magazine editor to say "this is seinen!".
*I find it hard that AoT and "Seikon no Qwaser" are considered with how intense their violence and fan service are/were

Doesn't it have more to do with intended audience than content?

The 70's are way different compare to now. Back then, Shonen anime had balls and kids didn't care.
Also this is awesome news. There is no way that they will edit the manga for the US market because they keep things uncut now. Devilman is not porn like Spawn29 said. So local retail stores will carry it.

When was the last time that a manga in the US that got edited down for violence? I think things will be fine. Devilman has gore and nudity just like any other comics that they would sell in the US.

Pretty much since we live in a different world now. Devilman deals with demons which is something that would appeal to kids and teens in the 70's since you had seinen like Golgo 13 at the time that is more appealing to adults.
