What?

Explain what you're talking about here.

This probably answers it-

I love fansubs. In fact, I fansub every week. Sure it eats up my Fridays, but it's FOR THE LOVE OF THE ANIME. Of course there are other externalities involved, but those don't have as much weight as THE LOVE OF THE ANIME. Pride? Joy? Numbers? Leechers? Illegality? Heck, I don't care. Only fansubbed anime can run on my Windows 98, 500 Khz K2 Processor, 56 MB RAM, 8 MB shared video RAM, 9 GB HD, in my anime club at school. Go Xvid.

Real fans support their favorite shows financially, period.

I disagree. A real fan knows that he is more important than all the people who produce the anime. Being hardcore is a matter of caring more about yourself and the anime than any of the silly financial concerns. Many will disagree with this, probably strongly, but it is no less an extreme position than that expressed in the column.

More to the point, I don't like this idea of morality by degrees. If it's ok to do n once, it's ok to do it thousands of times. Contrapositively, if it's not ok to do something en masse, it's also wrong to do it once.

Except people give a shit about Naruto, and it's 13 episodes for $50, not 3 dubtitled episodes (with an amazingly shitty dub) for $20.

I mean VCRs are still around after a couple of decades, and I don't think many people would make the case that recording a show is theft.

My mom is a copyright specialist and has been beating this into me for years. So here goes.

He actually is right, it isn't illegal. But that is because you are recording the commercials too. It is the same reason broadcasting companies will yank footage off the internet. With sites like Youtube you can uplaod edited footage and remove the commercials.

Network and basic cable channels make money off of commercials, the same way HBO and Showtime make it off of a subscribtion fee. So while personal recordings are not illegal, public veiwings and distribution are.

Infact, the only time you can legally show copyrighted video is for educational purposes.

So wait... being a "hardcore" fan means being a self-centered, self-serving prick and not giving back to the people who created the thing you love in the first place? How in the world is a fan more important than the producer? Am I reading this right, or did you mean something else? Please explain.

Wonder why it disappeared form DDD. It was only $33 there

Sticks and stones, was refering to the RRP rather than discounted prices, but you get the idea.

I don't understand. What if I recorded Neon Genesis Evangelion off SBS (a channel that used to not show commercials during shows)? I remember the old days when my family would record stuff off TV alot, and we usually paused recording at the advertisements. So as I said before, I don't understand why "because you're recording commercials" is a reason why people turn a blind eye to VCR recording.

I'm not saying VCR recording is right or wrong or anything, just wondering about the "recording commercials" thing.

Because, even if you arn't recording the commercials you still have to sit through them. It is your option not to watch them, however they are still being played on air. Its the same reason places like comedycentral and MTV websties can show footage. They are playing the commercials, even if you don't watch them, and thus are making money.

The other reason that there would be no big controversy over home recordigs is that you are not distributing them, or showing them in a public forum.

I'd explain it in a better way, but then I would have to get into a disscussion about it with my mother.

Wow you really have lost your grip on reality. Rolling Eyes I think we could even have a tie to Otaku, but even most of them devote themselves to an honest fandom most of the time.
