Back when I was first getting into anime I was attracted to Here Is Greenwood just because I really liked the box design. Instead of a still from the anime with some text over it, Greenwood had an attractive box design that included characters from the anime, but on an original background with attractive lettering.

My point? I dunno. Just as the Jurrasic Park covers and posters have an attractive logo that suggests the subject matter (dinos) instead of having a big Frazetta painting of dinos eating somnebody, so anime distributors could try more design-y ways of packaging the stuff.

I agree. For instace the packaging for Utena (DVDs, and VHS) is pretty bad (I'm referring to the first 13 pisodes released by CPM).
The original japanese box art were really nice, but instead they opted for fuzzy screenshots with a bright blue and pink background. Now with their release of the second season, the package design is closer to that of the original japanese.
There is a slight problem though, the way they write Utena on the DVD boxes is always different (between the first tv season, the second and the movie). It would be awesome if the series had a more consistent design but I'm nitpicking.
BTW, when is Here is Greenwood going to be released on DVD?

The cases for Trouble Chocolate, which I just noticed the other day, are the kinda thing I'm talking about. I don't know anything about the show, but the cover is done up to look like a big chocolate bar, with a little picture of the characters in one corner.

Anyway, I doubt CPM is in any rush to rerelease Here is Greenwood; shows like Love Hina offer simular entertainment and are newer and hipper.

I thought Greenwood had a pretty plain box. It's basically the characters on a white background with the title above them. (Even though the title lettering is pretty cool.) Heroic Legend of Arislan had a nicer box, even if I didn't really like the show.

Well, that's just it: an attractively designed logo with a small anime character can be much more visually appealing (at least I thought so) than some hack job were they slap a cel on a box and through a logo on it. It's a minimalist, design-y approach that I prefer.
