So there's a board for recalling an anime that you once saw, but can't identify. Others who have seen the series would then specify the series for the questioner, and that would be the end of it.
This is similar, but I don't think it should go in the same thread. It's for identifying characters, and in this case, I haven't even seen the series. I actually made this board to find out who this person was, because I saw them on an AMV and they caught my interest. The problem is, I know nothing of their name, voice actor, anything of the sort. I doubt anyone has this problem, but I decided to open it up to the unlikely people who do, and not just ask this question for myself and be done with it. Okay, before I start, I'll say that I have tried to look into it. I went through two character lists of the series, and couldn't find this person anywhere. That's why I've taken these measures. - This person is from 'Gundam Wing' (I believe, or at least that was what it said in the AMV title.) -I think this person is a male, but they look a little feminine. They could easily be female, but what adds to the fact that I think they're male is that in the AMV, they lipsink to a male voice. - This person fairly short (at least compared to the people he/she's around), has dark pink hair that appears quite neat, and pale blue eyes. This person seems really interesting, at least with the way they're portrayed in the AMV. I'd appreciate the identification of this character if anyone knows who I'm talking about. Perhaps they're a minor character (although most of the AMV is about them, so they must appear quite a few times.) An awkward board, but thanks for anyone who can help. -Sii. |

It's been awhile since I've had to discuss Wing, but what pops into my head off-hand is Mariemaia Kushrenada, the not so nice daughter of Treize Kushrenada. She appears only in Endless Waltz, where she is the main villian. More info here.

It's...It's an eight year old female?
It's going to be very hard for me to continue liking this person. I have an issue with female characters. All of them. I try not to be so gender-biased, but I have never liked a female character the most, or even had one as one of my favourites. Wow. I'm still completely shocked at 'her' gender. And her age, well, not as bad. I have one question, though. If you've seen 'her' entire role, that is. spoiler[Does she...die? In the AMV, it certainly looked like it at the very end.] Either way, that's exactly the person. Thank you for going to the trouble. [/spoiler] |

That's unfortunate. May I ask the specific reason?
-- Again, thank you Kazuki-san. Maybe I ask too many questions, but why would someone of such a young age have such a high status over others? After doing a bit of surfing, I see she's referred to in high terms like Her Highness and the like. Is there a reason for this? |

It's not so much a status that she gained herself, but rather something she inherited from her father Treize. It's a long complicated story, but you can read a bit about him here. Basically, even though Treize is spoiler[dead], there are enough people around who were once loyal to him that they rally around his daughter, in order for her to succeed in the attempt her father failed at. Although, at the same time, what she tries to do is not what Treize was trying to do. It's all rather complicated, and I would suggest watching the series and Endless Waltz if you get the chance. For all of the bashing that gets done to Wing by people, it is a fairly good story, if nothing else. |

It's strange. I always thought all of that anime with the giant fighting machines would be boring and quite plotless, but the AMV made me see differently, and looking into it further shows me that there are some unique characters in this.
If I were ever to watch GW, would I start with the basic '(TV)'? I see there are many gundam related things on the anime search list, so I'm not quite sure where to start if I get the chance. Another question, if you don't mind: Is this girl only existant in 'Endless Waltz'? I see that this 'endless waltz' is only 3 episodes long, if I read correctly. Is it just a random kind of sequel plot put in after the real episodes? Also, is there a reason it gets bashed? I know that you, being a fan, may have a very one sided opinion as to how well done the anime is, but do you know the main point about the 'bashing', you mentioned? (is it drawn-out, animation, etc?) |

Yes, you would just start with Gundam Wing TV. There are indeed many many incarnations of Gundam, but Wing takes place in an alternate universe, so knowledge of other series is not necessary.
Yes, Mariemaia only appears in Endless Waltz. There are two versions of it, a 3 episode OVA and a movie version. It's not really a random edition, but it does not deal with the main plot of the TV series, no. It does occur after the events of the TV series.
It gets bashed for some of the same reasons Gundam in general gets bashed around depending on who you talk to. The plot does get dragged out a bit, and the characters are fairly one-dimensional for the most part. Some people find it hard to last through all of the political drama. If you can just sit back and enjoy it, it's really rather good, IMO. |

I must be getting really annoying by now, but I have a few last questions.
What's the difference between the movie version and the three episode version? If I were to watch Endless Waltz without watching anything else, would I understand anything, or is it an extention of the TV episodes that I couldn't possibly understand until I saw the episodes that came before it? Thanks again. |

If it was annoying I would just stop answering.
The movie is a compilation of the 3 OVA eps with some extra footage added in. It's been long enough that I can't say which one is necessarily better. Perhaps someone else would chime in with some info.
Well, that's harder to say. You wouldn't know any of the backstory on any of the characters, which I think would be a good thing to know, or much of what had happened previously. I would say that yes, you could get through it well enough to understand the plot. |

Actually, Wing is typically regarded as one of the worst Gundam series even among other Gundam fans. It's faulted for having absolutely awful plot pacing in the TV series (going ten episodes or more with seemingly no point whatsoever), absolutely vapid characters, a complete disregard for continuity or coherency, unstable physics (the buster rifle that can destroy a colony in one shot, and can't even dent a door the next), and just generally sacrificing all the things required to make a good story (or...even a story, period) all for the sake of "style." It's also—despite popular opinion—the least political of all the Gundam series. The "politics" in Gundam Wing are nothing more than self-contradictory, faux-philosophizing nonsense that never really goes anywhere. It's only when you get into the early Universal Century or Turn-A Gundam that you get to the meat of Gundam's political side. Wing is all sound signifying no fury. All bark and no bite (or, a bite that turns inward and negates itself all within the same monologue half the time). Even the mech designs are largely dull and uninspired—especially the non-Gundam mobile suits—until Endless Waltz comes along. Now Endless Waltz is viewed in a considerably more positive light. It's still seen as largely vapid, but because it's brief and rapidly-paced, many of the annoyances that go along with the "vapid" label (such as the one-dimensional characters and "politics" that go nowhere) are made more palatteable in their brevity, and the mech designs are really taken over the top to the point of being...quite spiffy, really. The producers seemingly realised that there was just no way that super-specialised, super-gimmicky designs like Deathscythe or Heavyarms could be made to look "practical" like most other Gundams, so they just had fun and took them to really extraordinary levels in Endless Waltz, which worked out really well. Siilent, if you really want to watch Gundam Wing, go for it. But if you ask me, a series more along the lines of Gundam 08th MS Team or Gundam SEED or (if you're into downloading) Gundam X would be a better place to start. They give you the same "hook you in" sort of intro to Gundam that Wing might, while at the same time telling a better and more well-constructed story. Plus with 08th MS there's an introduction to the Universal Century (Gundam's "main timeline") that gets you interested in learning more. Or, if you want to start from the beginning and have a tolerance for older anime, there's always the original Mobile Suit Gundam, available both as the dub-only TV series or the sub-only movie trilogy.
I'd side with the movie version. A few of the extra scenes provide better continuity, and some of the rearranged scenes (the flashbacks to the characters' pasts) provide a better flow. Also, the action scenes later in the movie are extended, which just makes them miles better, because in the three-episode OVA they seemed painfully cut short. They just start fighting and suddenly they're exhausted, whereas the movie actually shows more of the fight and has their exhaustion later on make more sense. |

Picking up Gundam Wing might not be that expensive because according to TRSI, Gundam Wing DVD Collection 1 will be released on Jan 24 2006 with and MSRP of $49.98. The run time on this first collection is 625 minutes. The complete collection run time is 1225 minutes so that should mean there will only be two volumes of these collections to complete the series. I will definatly pick these up because I remember watching this when I was younger and even if it doesn't live up to what I remember, I wouldn't mind adding it to my collection.

And I would generally agree comparing it to other versions of Gundam. However, it seems to get many of the same arguments that SEED and Destiny have also received, at least among newer fans. While not being overtly political, it spends a great deal of time trying to be. It's certainly not a series I would rate incredibly highly, but it can most assuredly be enjoyable, so long as you don't come into it expecting.. well.. expecting something Gundam-like, for lack of a better thought process. It's not the pinnacle of Gundam, that's for sure. But, for a newb to Gundam it's really not a bad place to start. Especially if there's some interest in the series aside from just wanting to give Gundam a try.
Boy, that brings back memories. I remember how excited my GF at the time was when I got her Wing Zero Custom for her b-day. Of course, I had to get Deathscythe at some point down the road, cause that was just her fave. Last time I crossed paths with her, probably a year ago, she still had them. |

I've glanced at Gundam SEED on my tv, actually, and it would seem interesting if I had any idea who anyone was and what was going on. Even more so if it wasn't dubbed into english, subs being preferred in my viewing anime. From the glances I've seen, Gundam SEED looks better animated, but from the AMV I saw of Gundam Wing (endless waltz) looks like it has more original and unique characters. That's on first appearance, though. I think I might start with Endless Waltz to see if the mecha concept even draws me in. I don't really like the over-used machine idea, but this seems original enough that I could accept it. After Endless Waltz, would going straight to SEED throw me off? |
