So I have got to know what the rest of you think. I have been buying all the new ones and I love where this story is going, I hope the ending is good in the mangas and nothing like the reflections ova. I heard there are only 26 mangas total, is that correct?

28.
I own up to Vol. 19 (except for 10, 12, and 16), but have only read up to Vol. 7. I chose to make a bulk order since there was a coupon at the time, but the coupon was for in-stock items only, meaning I'll either have to buy the the rest at a bookstore or order them online at a later date. I love the anime, but just recently became a casual manga fan. So of course, I started with Kenshin and am loving it. I've also heard how the manga ends, and yes, it's a HECK of a lot better than Seisouhen's. |

Man this is where the third arc of the story begins, it has a little bit of a legend of Kyoto story feeling, but Kenshin tells all about his past in more detail than Trust & Betrayal, and everything about Enishi and his revenge. The way Watsuki wrote it is absolutely nothing like the Seisouhen's ending so far. I just got 22 and the way that volume ended really made me want to see what happens next. The way it ended kicked total "butt" Last edited by Thanatos01s2 on Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:16 pm; edited 1 time in total |

They are better because it is the "true" story. Some of the events in the first two seasons were misconstrued by the animation studio. But I like watching anime rather than reading it. So the story is better in the manga's. |

As Thanatos01s2 said, the manga is the source material for the anime. So of course, the manga would be pretty good as well. From what I've read so far, I enjoy the manga more than the anime to this point, but only when comparing season one to the first six volumes of manga. The manga is much more detailed in its storytelling and actually draws a lot of it out. I still like the parts of the anime that were portrayed very accurately such as the Jin'ei, Oniwabanshuu, and very short Tsukioka arc. However, the Raijuuta arc is infinitely better in the manga. Granted, Raijuuta is still a crappy villain, but the presentation is much more enjoyable in comparison to the anime. Much of the anime's first season is filler. The sumo guy, the cannon girl, the fake doctor, Yahiko taking Kenshin's sakabattou, the former hitokiri gone teacher, the trip on the train, and that really bad pirate arc in the last 3 episodes never happened. If you've watched the anime as much as I have with great attention to the details, you will love the manga. I've yet to see how Kyoto is portrayed in contrast between the two media, but dang, I love the Kyoto arc in anime form, and I hope to see all of it again and then some when I eventually get to Tsuioku-hen and Jinchuu. |

I'd gladly take the Pirate Arc over the Sumo wrestler and Train episodes. Regardless, you can skip pretty much everything after the Oniwabanshu (except the two episodes about Sanosuke) and go straight to the Kyoto Arc. Technically, the Raijuta arc isn't filler, but it's not very good and isn't really necessary. Back on topic: the manga is much better than the anime since it skips said crappy episodes (although the Raijuta thing still wasn't very good, but it was better) and it has the Jinchuu arc which is possibly better than the Kyoto arc. |

I have it up to Vol. 22 and am impatiently waiting for 23. I'm an addict - I need my Kenshin fix!
I like the manga a lot better than the anime. I tried watching the anime, but about four episodes in I was like, "Whoaa, I hate this." The anime pretty much bored me to death. |

I definately disagree with you. You can not judge an anime based on the first several episodes. I don't think you know what you are talking about. (based on watching about 4 episodes) The show gets much better as it goes, like many others. |

Since the anime pretty much follow the manga with a few filler, it's obvious that she know what the Kenshin plot is about. She's saying that she like the manga more than the anime and that they don't compare. That's reasonable since the filler weren't that great or the adaption wasn't done very well. As mention by other people on this thread, they felt the manga was better than the anime. I can remember how awesome GANTZ was in manga form and when I saw the anime adaption, I thought it was really bad. |

You know, I maybe the opposite: when I first saw bootlegs of the anime years ago, I thought it was unbelievably great. Now that I'm older and finally borrowing the manga from a friend, I just think of it as a slightly above average shonen adventure that really doesn't have much impact on me. Of course I'd probobly have been equally blown away had I read the manga at that age.

Speaking of the anime of Kenshin, have you seen the three dvd series of it? It is the one where it shows his life, like when he was a little kid. It is call something like Samuri X-trust and betrayel. Do you know whether they are going to make that into a manga series or not?

It's from the manga. After the Kyoto arc, the manga shows a flashback or reminscence of what his childhood was like, how he became Hitokiri Battousai, and why he made his vow not to take another life. Again, the manga is the source material with most of the anime being based on the original work. The filler I mentioned above, the third season, and just about all of the second OAV (Seisouhen) is either not a part of the manga or a bad representation. I take it you've seen all of the anime, so just read the manga as much as you can, and save whatever comparisons for when you eventually finish. |

I watched more than four, but four was about the number where it really hit me. I just don't like it. The dialogue really bothers me... |

Ok, there cannot be a RK disscussion without me butting in.
Now I have seen every single episode of Rurouni Kenshin from the 1st two seasons, own all the Directors cuts of Samurai X, and all volumes of the US-version manga, 1-22, and I can say without fear that yes, the filler in the 1st season may have been un-neede, it doesn't make them god-awful (I actually liked the Jinpu Squad mini-arc and the pirate-arc) but to stay true to Watsuki-sensei's original series, then the mangas may be all you really need. Of course, the anime may have it's merits, and it's what hooked me into RuRoKen, in the place first, the pacing and story telling does seem to work better in the manga, and at times, it even has better artwork than the anime, except for my two favorite fight scenes, spoiler[between Saito and Kenshin In the begging of the kyoto arc], and spoiler[between Sano and Anji in Mt. Fuji]. Now, if you've seen the anime's third season, then you must know that it's nothing what Watsuki inteded to be in the series at all, and you must read the manga's for the true ending, or see Samurai X for a short version of it, and I do mean short. Thanks for putting up with my ranting, everyone... |
