I decided that my next tattoo would pay homage to Cowboy Bebop. To me, Cowboy Bebop was more than just anime; it was an inspiration. It set the standard of what an anime could be. For 26 episodes and a movie, Shinichiro Watanabe orchestrated a universe that we all wish we could live in. To this day, I still get an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia re-watching the series for the 6th time. The soul moving, head boppin' music made by the uber talented Yoko Kanno, Mai Yamane (who I think doesn't get the credit she deserves) and The Seatbelts, have created a soundtrack that to this day can't be topped. Though it sounds cheesy, I look at Spike as a role model (corny I know, but bear with me) in the sense of how he goes about life. His laid back, cool under pressure, doesn't panic, and just the way that he doesn't take life too seriously inspires me to the very core of my being. So now that you know my reasons of wanting to get a Cowboy Bebop related tattoo, I wanted to share some of my ideas and open to suggestions. My goal is to try to find one thing the embodies what CB is as a whole. The idea I had was getting the the last line of the series which said You're gonna carry that weight. Another one was getting a silhouette of the Swordfish that Spike pilots. The main idea that I'm trying to get at is that when I look at the tattoo I want to feel the same nostalgia that I feel when I watch the anime. Anyone have any suggestions?

For a second there, I thought you were describing Ed, who seems to be more laid back than Spike. I say this, because Ed's "smile" she posts all over the "interstellar internet" would make for a great tattoo.
Only a few would get its meaning, which is pretty much all about the message Cowboy Bebop delivers. |

Only read title and skimmed, but cmon. Don't get a tattoo of an anime figure. It is on your body for life. Really, you'll be scarred for life. I don't care what you say, but anime is not that important nor does it bear any significance (reasons why people should get tattoos). If you wanna represent that you like the show many other smart alternatives.
And wow. I'm sorry but what a dumb ass reason to get a tattoo. Nostalgia? Put the DVD in the DVD player and watch the show. What you're doing is equivalent to a dumb ass who has a tattoo of his or her ex. Yeah. Anyway, if you are going to continue with this idiotic whimsical idea: 1. No quotes. All of them are dumb unless you want to be seen as an immature brat. Show is nice, but actually read the quote OUT OF CONTEXT. Yeah, the lines are pretty stupid. Just like the one you mentioned. The typical response to that line would be, "OK? And?" If you want text, you need a block quote, which takes up a lot of space. Hence, the tattoo better be significant. 2. Ship is nice idea at first, but that is too out of the ordinary. However, it is your body. If you don't mind being marked by something the world perceives to be obtuse, go for it. 3. Guns, knifes, bombs.....yeah. You definitely don't want any weapons on your body as you WILL be ostracized mistaken for gang affiliations. 4. Characters hmm. Well, lets be real. Anime characters are funky looking. Weird bodies, crazy hair, and did I mention just plain weird? Now, you can get this tattoo, but expect to be judged so choose wisely. If I recall, CB has many good messages, but little to no good images (literally speaking CB is a cesspool) Also, make sure this Cowboy Bebop tattoo is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY. If not, 10 years from now you'll be asking yourself why you got this stupid tattoo. Make sure you get a specialist and not got to your local John Doe. Tattoos do "fade" and look like shit years later if done incorrectly. Your tattoo should be an investment and not based on a whim. Cough up the dough to get it done right. I have taken some of your ideas and thoughts into consideration. Please understand that people get tattoos for all sorts of reasons. Whether people think they're dumb or pointless is entirely up to respective persons opinion. Remember that most people get tattoos because it's significant to them. So bringing up the argument that people will think it looks "dumb" as you say, has no bearing. But I have taken your suggestions into consideration. I should have made it clearer that this is not my first tattoo, and have a reputable artist that does my work.

Wasn't there a character like that in Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles, the original series? I don't know much about tattoo's but I remember reading a article on the web talking about how hard it is to remove them and make it less obvious you ever had one. I once had a teacher whose son wanted a tattoo as a kid and the teacher promised him once he was old enough he could get on, but only if he read several articles talking about the risks and consequences on having one and having one removed. Needless to say, after reading what he did, apparently he no longer wanted one. Granted this was probably a decade ago or more so times have changed since then. |

So many iconic moments... To offer some ideas (instead of gushing pretentious judgment
1) You know how Spike had his right eye surgically removed and replaced with a Robotic eye? So that effectively, one eye looked into the future and the other could only see the past? Maybe something featuring that as a motif. 2) A tattoo featuring Julia falling after being shot, with the doves flying behind her. You could maybe use her silhouette or something. 3) There were also lots of imagery of falling, scattered rose petals (being juxtaposed against shrapnel). I remember one scene in the cathedral episode where the falling shrapnel being reflected in Spike's left eye as he fell (the original eye, that still sees the past) triggered flashbacks to a time when he saw petals falling from a window (Julia's, I think). 3.5) There was also the rose that Spike had picked up from the grave when it was raining, right before Julia walked up to him to shoot him. A rose in a puddle. Which I guess later she scattered out her window. 4) There is the final scene, with Spike's last "bang" before collapsing. If you notice, his left eye (the original one, that still sees the past) is bloodied and shut, while he uses his right eye for the shot. Lots of meaning were imbued into this scene, so maybe if you could get a design that deftly captures this into a nice design that would be a great summation of the series. 5) There was also the imagery of the star fading from the sky, like the shaman prophesied. Don't know how that could work, but maybe couple that with the words "Free" or something? 6) You could always get a vintage-looking sailor tattoo featuring Faye, haha. 7) Ein? Good luck, hope it comes out well and in excellent taste. Whatever happens, happens! |
