I was browsing through the Japanese Afteroon and it seem like most of my favorite title like Blade of the Immortal, Genshiken, Eden, Love Roma are running in this magazine. I'm not familar with the other titles. So does anybody know what other title are running in Afternoon (by Kodansha) right now?

I'm also hoping someone pick up the Gankutsuoh manga soon too.

Does anybody else wish thre was a seinen anthology like Afternoon, over here?

i cant help you with your first question, but i second the second. as the years that i read manga progress i become increasingly less interested in the typical shounen series. i find them all mindless repetive and only mildly entertaining if i'm looking for something to waste my time with. i wish raijin was still around; they had some good stuff, more than shounen jump does at least. the greatest would be if an all new weekly magazine came out here specializing in seinen type mangas. un-fortunatly, i think it will be 3 years at the earliest if that ever happens.

Yes Afternoon magazine is a great anthology. Some other great manga titles running in it are Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Historie, Vinland Saga, and of course the popular Oh My Goddess.

Ikki is another great seinen anthology. I don't necessary feel like there needs to be a seinen anthology over here. Just having more seinen manga titles licensed is enough for me, but if there is one, great.

Afternoon seems to run a mix of diffrent types of seinen manga: some titles are targeted at otaku (Genshiken, Seraphic Feather, Oh My Goddess!), some seem to target more of the alternative crowd (Coo's World, Nasu), some are pretty standard mature action series (Blade of the Immortal, Eden, Blame!) and some really don't fit into any categories (YKK, Mushi-shi.) While there is alot of mediocre series in the anthology (it's 800 pages after all) but the good ones make up for it. Of what's currently running in Afternoon (not including the stuff that's been running forever like OMG! or Blade) I read:

Mushi-shi-One of the best series by far. Japanese folktales retold in a series of loosely connected but amazing stories. I've got hopes that Del Rey will pick this one up.

Hour of the Mice-Kei Tomie's new series has gotten off to a solid start, focusing on a exclusive school that's really a government experment. So far none of the characters stand out, but recent revalations should change that, and it's setting itself up to be a good "twist" series.

Histore-I have yet to read this but based on the manga-ka's track record and hype on the net this is one of the best series in the anthology (supposidly one of the best "epic" style manga of all time.) I wouldn't be suprised if this one gets picked up by Darkhorse.

Genshiken-While I sometimes feel that this gets a bit too much praise (especially after reading the superior Ikki counterpart) it's still an above average title that's highly enjoyable.

Tokko-Sorry GTO fans, but I just couldn't get into this one. By the books shonen title that belongs somewhere else as far as I'm concerned, even if it is getting an anime adaptation (to be fair it could improve, though I doubt that.)

Me and the Devil Blues-My pick for best series in the mag right now. I cannot stress enough how awesome this manga is. A brilliant mix of gritty realism and folklore that makes you feel like your living in the depression-era South. Anyone interested in the Blues, Robert Johnson or just great manga needs to read this.

Yeah, Tokko was pretty bad. Maybe Tohru Fujisawa should stick to crude humor, comedy-based series

Was this series adapted into an anime recently or am I thinking of a different series.

So what's the best anthology in japan among adults?

Depends on what your looking for. I'm sure alot of people would say Morning or Big Comics Superior (Shogakukuan's anthology aimed at more casual readers or old-school readers.) My pick would probobly be either Afternoon or Ikki, Shogakukuan's anthology devoted to more experimental manga. They've always been alot more progressive than the other major manga companies, and Ikki (which is basically their answer to Afternoon minus the otaku manga) continues that tradition. No.5, G Senjou Heaven's Door, Witches, Ryuguden, Sexy Voice and Robo and Noramimi are all top of the line. Even the ones I'm not crazy about are still quite good.
Big Comic Spirits has put out alot of masterpieces in the past, but now alot of those artists like Naoki Yamamoto and Taiyo Matsumoto are in Ikki, so I'd definitally give that mag the edge right now.
