I watched the first 4 volumes of martian successor nadesico and can not wait until I see the last 2 discs. I know it is basically the same as Tenchi Muyo but it has a big enough difference to be recognized as its own show. Just wanted to know everyone's opinion on the show.

Basically the same as Tenchi Muyo? That's the first time I've heard that. It's more like a parody of 70s mecha shows than a harem show.

I hate this series, however I'm a big fan of Space Opera. I liked the parodies of Go Nagai's series of Giant Robots but that's all.

Why did you hate it? Just wondering (and I have to admit this is my favorite anime series); hate is such a strong word.
I loved the parody of it, the mismatched personnel to the mission they had and the twist of just who the enemy really is.
I have a hard time finding any corrolation to the Tenchi Muyo! series, which would probably be my second favorite if I ever get around to finishing it.

It's been such a long time since I've seen this one, but it's a great series. I loved the Gekigangar fanboy. (His final words, "I never got to take him to the beach!" is one of my favorite anime quotes) I've never understood Ruri's popularity, though. So what, she calls her crewmates idiots every time she speaks and becomes a mega-popular cult icon? I don't get it. (I've personally never been a big fan of her)

She's 11 years old.

This was a "Park your brain and hang on for the fun ride" anime for me. After all, I was watching Gasaraki and Boogiepop Phantom at around the same time. It did annoy me that I ended up buying the first DVD last thanks to the very odd behaviour of the nearby Virgin Megastore: they wouldn't carry in stock all the volumes for most anime series that had more than 4 DVD volumes to them. I ended up ordering the first volume of Nadesico and the last volume of Gasaraki from the States. Anyways, I thought that the series is fluff but it's good fluff. Light weight, entertaining and well written.

Ughhh.
I thought the first few episodes of this show were amazing, due to the Gekiganger fanboy. Afterwards, i was less enthralled but I remember the cooking scenes were quite funny. I kind of lost interest about midway through. Thanks for reminding me, its been years so I should finish it. Is it worth watching to the end?

As has already been pointed out, MSN is a general mecha parody (at least at first) rather than a harem-style series, so it has little connection to Tenchi Muyo.
I could see how Ruri would be so popular; her sardonic attitude about things (and putting a voice to what the viewer was probably thinking about the scene) worked for me. She also comes from the Rei Ayanami mold, which had been quite well proven to interest fans.
If you lost interest about halfway through, astra, then you missed the best parts of the series. It elevates to a whole new level of parody when it's revealed that the whole Gekiganger thing isn't just a joke, it's the model for society for the enemy! It also occasionally turns serious in the final 10 episodes, including the one episode about the guilt-ridden admiral that goes on the suicide trip in the mecha and the revelation of a couple of major surprises about the real identities of some characters. The ending's very open-ended, and the very serious follow-up movie may or may not satisfy as a conclusion.
My favorite scenes involved Yurika's "fishing" in one episode and various comments about action figures that another character was making.
MSN isn't top-quality stuff (how it ever once got voted "the greatest anime series ever" by anime fans is beyond me) but it's definitely worth watching out.

As I said, I love Space Opera, it's my favorite genre. It could be why I'm specially demanding, but I saw no good point except the Giant Robots fan, it was boring, characters had nothing special, what else ?...
I heard so many good appreciations about this anime that I was disappointed.

I consider myself a fan of space opera as well (having spent my formative years cutting my teeth on the original Star Wars and shows like Star Blazers) and I really enjoy Nadesico. Sometimes it gets a little conflicted about what it wants to be (a parody of space anime or a serious story), but that seems to be a habit of anime in general.
Akito absolutely skewers the "reluctant hero mecha pilot" archetype that prevails in many anime (from Gundam to Evangelion and back to Gundam). Yurika is an amusing departure from the "gruff old man as captain" motif of characters like Yamato's Captain Okita or Macross's Captain Grobal/Gloval.
I was angry about the early and unexpected death of Gai as well. It was probably one of the few times that I actually started cursing at my television.

Well... It may not be a really good series, but I admit that the very first manga books I got were volumes 3 and 4 of MSN. The series is mostly the crew's obsession with Gekigangar (mostly Akito) and Yurika's pathetic crush.
Ruri's cool 'coz she's more mature than SOME OTHER PEOPLE I've seen.
