This was a really enjoyable interview. OHSHC was definitely one of my adolescent age formative type anime, and while I confess the manga lost my interest after it became the "everybody has a crush on Haruhi show," I still think the adaptation holds up as a great comedy bolstered by some really fun choices in direction and soundtrack.
Behind the Scenes!! sounds neat, I hadn't heard anything about it until now but it sounds like it's right up Hatori's alley (and mine) so I'll probably give it a look. From what I can tell, Hatori's at her best when she's focusing on character dynamics through the lens of comedy, so it's both interesting and unsurprising that she considers that her preference. Millennium Snow was an incredibly uneven effort, with a looot of hamfisted soap romance sandwiched between characters who were drawn too thinly to carry it. Ouran struck a much better balance up until the last third or so, and while that one didn't stick the landing for me, I'd be interested to see if her third effort continues to display that progression in her style and tone.
