Excellent week 2 numbers for Yuri, but what happened to Flip Flappers?

For some reason, magical realism yuri shows aren't exactly "in vogue" in Japan right now. Keep in mind that Yurikuma Arashi - which had a similar demographic in the West but a much more famous director at the helm - only sold an average of 1k per volume last year. |

Yuri has never been sold well or been popular It's like the opposite of America where "lesbians are okay because there hot, but gay dudes are icky" Yaoi themes do a lot better which is why you see it more in anime even if its not BL like WSJ stuff and other kids shows. |

Meh, never say never. Maria-sama ga Miteru S1 sold an average of 10k per volume, which was pretty good for a shoujo light novel adaptation. |

Congrats to YOI and the fans of the series. I really wish Flip Flappers would have sold better, it was for me a very fun and visually engaging show. I knew it probably wouldn't sell well, but these numbers are a little more then heart breaking. Now's a high point for Yaoi fans with YOI, I wish we'd get a yuri show that does well someday as well.
Edit: Also with Flip Flappers I think a lot of the references and appeal worked more with people in the western audience, Mad Max and so fourth, similar to how the audience for Trigger shows often seems to be more Western then Japanese. It'd be interesting to see the creators behind Flip Flappers work with Trigger and their staff on a project. |

Flip Flappers was released on the 6th maybe that was just the first wave of sales. Everyone was just waiting for payday this week obviously.

Not surprised at all about Flip Flappers. Keep in mind that the original Little Witch Academia was absolutely shunned in Japan compared to the west. That sort of adventure, sense of wonder, and fluid animation doesn't seem to impress otaku as nearly as much as it does anime fans elsewhere. I'm actually super curious to see how the LWA TV anime will sell in Japan for this reason.

You just need to look at what otaku are buying right now to understand that: Fate/Grand Order. Otaku want to buy a terrible commercial for a mobile game so they can self insert into bland male protagonist and have their waifu on screen with them.

Were those, though? Even on ANN they weren't exactly thought to be the best. The reviewers did mention Keijo!! here and there in their features, but Flip Flappers showed up even less. Even going by MAL ratings, those two are quite behind the others of the season. |

Considering that it sold 883 units 2 days after it's release still a positive sign.
