So many good shows will be completely missing if they don't do something soon.... Save Slayers!

Although, all anime companies do just let licenses lapse, and that may be the case with half of these... But good stuff from the last 10-15 years. Why not?

I really hate this whole thing. Crunchyroll and Funimation were fine apart.
I hate monopolies and capitalism.

I never bother redeeming any of those 'digital copy' codes.

This is essentially why. Saw it coming from miles and miles away.

They haven't even transferred or remove the region lock of some anime titles available from the Funimation Australia catalogue to be available on the CR Australia catalogue.

Is the monthly plan going to be $9.99 now? lol The e-mail I got says, "As part of our transition to Crunchyroll, the price of your new Crunchyroll plan will increase from USD $5.99/month to CAD $12.49/month beginning April 07, 2024."

Funimation's days were numbered and we all knew it, but removing people's digital purchases is just robbery. Crunchyroll's parent company is like 30 times bigger than Funimation ever was; they can absolutely afford to let people keep the property they paid for. This just laziness and greed, and taking advantage of loyal fans.

Pretty terrible to see. I only had digital copies from my physical purchases, so I never really used them, but I'm sure there people that did, not to mention those who actually bought digital copies.

The crunchyroll store still hasn't migrated over things like wishlists or names from RightStuf, so I don't have much confidence that things will be different for their streaming service, but hopefully they get their act together someday

I bought all my digital stuff from places that sell them like Amazon so this does not affect me in any way. One irritating thing Funimation did was they did not have all their stuff available all the time on Amazon which is why I had to uses other places like iTunes or Vudu as back-up, though it is a shame the digital purchase of the Dragon Ball series are on Amazon and the older Dragon Ball movies is available only on iTunes.

It was 19 years ago sometime this month that I made my first purchase from Funimation: the complete DVD collection of Fruits Basket (2001), AKA the only Fruits Basket anime at the time. While this development isn't unexpected, it's sad to see the last remnants of the old regime get swept away for good. I've identified around 7 titles that are only on Funi that I don't possess in any other form to watch over the next ~2 months. A lot of the untransferred content, like Slayers or most lower-profile shows from before ~2017, is probably in the twilight of its licensing period, so it was toast either way.

However, another hidden loss beyond the actual titles are uncensored versions of certain shows, such as Azur Lane and Seven Mortal Sins. For those and other titles, only the TV-censored versions were added to CR, while Funi still streams the home-video versions for subscribers. At least if you're willing to watch the English dub -- often, the Japanese versions were locked behind the Digital-Content-Owner (i.e. "Blu-Ray purchasers") paywall. Perhaps as an effort to prevent fans in Japan from using VPNs to stream those titles on Funimation? I'm reasonably sure no Japanese streaming service is going to have uncut ecchi anime.

That same language disparity has been transferred to CR in some instances. If you watch A Sister's All You Need on CR in Japanese, you get the TV broadcast version, but in English, it's uncensored. Check ep 09, about 17:00 if you want a NSFW comparison.

Titles that're over 10 years old, like Rosario+Vampire, predate Funi's simulcasting system. So if they made it to CR, the only version Funi had would be the home-video masters.

It's astounding how every single thing the Crunchyroll brand has bought/absorbed/steamrolled has become objectively worse. If they were actively trying to screw over customers and nothing else, they couldn't have asked for better results.

Technically, this is all a FUNimation/Sony problem. Sony bought FUNimation, then bought Crunchyroll from Time Warner. They rebranded Funi to CR because it had a bigger international presence and was a more recognizable brand. Now it's all run by Sony Group Corporation & Aniplex.

Merger aside, I now have access to more anime in the last ~5 years, than I have had in my entire life though streaming. The missing titles are a pain, but the original licensor could have chosen not to renew, they might not even exist as a company anymore. CR might also have to relicense some of the shows again because the contract was only for the FUNimation brand. There's a lot of legal issues that need to be worked through.

This is my edited list of the available list. (I made it for another place that had the original next to it, so you'll have to do the comparing yourself)

The blanks represent shows I removed from the list, but in most cases, only the sub of the shows I removed are on CR - I also moved the Live Action movies to the bottom, as I doubt CR would ever consider them. I left the Free! Orchestra thing because CR does host music videos and that kinda fits.

Man, this really is the end of an era. Not only does CR not have closed captions for a lot of their stuff, FUNi at least gave you the option of watching either the broadcast or home video versions of their shows, which CR doesn't let you do. To think not even two years ago, FUNimation was still experimenting with remote recording and making a ton of fun, experimental English dubs and hiring studios that hadn't gotten to do anime dubs in years, something CR just won't bother doing.

RIP Funimation. You may not have been perfect, but nobody will forget the impact you made on the Western anime fandom as a whole.
