I like how they brought things around to explain the new addition to the cast and how the plot of the main shows is reflecting back on the Isekai Quartet versions (Julius who?) it's a clever way of incorporating popular stuff like Garfiel, Otto, and Beatrice's character development. And Rem gets to still be around!

That whole scene of the Seven Shades and the Pleaides' having the same names killed me. Also Asami Seto voicing three characters in one class.

Cid/Shadow is enjoying himself as much as ever but it'll be interesting to see how he bounces off of everybody.

I like how the OP has a First Take like intro.

I love how we can get stuff like Megumin interacting with the Re:Zero crew as they help her with her Explosions and we get more Megumin and Emilia dialogue in two episodes than we've gotten in two seasons and a movie.

Best running gag in the series: Ram's delighted, sarcastic grunts whenever one of her classmates proves to be as much of a dumbass as she considers them all to be. Makes me laugh out load every single time. That's great voice acting when you can perfectly relay so much characterization with an inarticulate sound.

I don't think they can have the clone characters (or whatever they are) cross-effect the originals because that would mean changing the continuity of like half a dozen of the most popular isekai series. Well, except for Shield Hero, since he's pretty much always in character and grumpily seems to avoid associating with anyone not in his crew.

This review right here is why I was hoping so fervently that this would get weekly reviews, and why I was so delighted that Richard was allowed to step up to do it. I don't follow closely all the franchises involved, and I tend to lose track of characters even in the ones I do, so I don't recognize many of the characters, especially in Ainz and Cid's crew (I could never keep Cid's harem straight even while watching his series). I also can't keep names in my head anymore, so when casts grow larger than about half a dozen mains, I often get lost when characters talk about others by name who aren't present. I would never in a million years have picked up on the hints Richard laid out in his review.

Speaking of names, the same-name syndrome was as brilliant as it was inevitable, and I honestly felt gleefully called out by it. Very Happy And episode 2 didn't waste any time before giving us a satisfying "I am atomic" moment, even if it was just to show off fancy fireworks. I cheered with joy.

I think as soon as I finish off my rewatch of all of Dr. Stone, I'll go back and watch IQ from the start to see how much more sinks in than the first time.

The main cast's (save Tanya) shared, knowing glances regarding Cid were hilarious. Ainz is probably the most embarrassed to be confronted with someone like that, since he remains perpetually humiliated by the antics of Pandora's Actor. In that he has much in common wit the heroine of Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess, adults confronted with the worst excesses of their sordid pasts. At heart, though, they retain a lot of love for it. Even Ainz still thinks Pandora's Actor's Mussolini-like military garb is kind of cool.

It's also a nice reminder that Ainz is sort of the glue that holds together the other three leads. He's old enough and was a salary man, thus being able to emphasize with Tanya (also, you know, they're both evil), while he was also in his heart a huge nerd like the boys. Even then, though, only Kazuma can see Cid in his "normal" guise, so unlike Ainz and Suburu he's least grown out of his nerd phase.

I know they nerf or buff characters as necessary on this show (could Rem really wrangle Shalltear or Albedo, much less both of them?), but even Ainz can't really compete with Shadow, who has literally world-destroying levels of power.

It's not a season of Isekai Quartet until Class 2 gets engaged in a fun group activity that divides the cast into fun, new, combinations.

Shadow and Ainz match well in their respective chuuni-ness. In fact Cid really does feel like he's having the time of his life maybe even more than in his own show.

I love how Tanya is taking Shadow seriously but all the other MC's can tell he's just trying to look cool. Will they figure out that Shadow is Cid soon?

Classic Aqua, hating on Ainz and crew until she thinks they can do something useful...and then going back to hating on them again when she finds out they can't.

Subaru and Beako moments give me life.

Admittedly he seems to have settled into getting along with everybody better in the movie, which I think was also the first time he actually called other characters by name.

I was really alarmed when Rem said she was sleepy. I wonder how IQ will deal with that? I can't see the writers having anything in this world affect the canon of the series' worlds, except as possible foreshadowing of already canon events that haven't yet made it to anime. But I trust whatever they've got planned. They haven't made a misstep yet. Smile

The zombie pasta looked suspiciously like Pandora's Actor with that three circle facial expression when it was standing up and swaying about. Perhaps it was never actually pasta at all?

I think I would get a lot more out of this series if I saw all these shows. It's still funny, and I can pick up on most of the humor and what each character is supposed to be in their home series, but yeah, episode 5 went over my head.

I've not seen any Tanya or Shield Hero, and only about 3/4 of the first seasons of Re:Zero and Overlord, so I appreciate the context the weekly reviews give.

Agreed on Yunyun! That poor girl. I cringe in advance whenever she appears, since she nearly always ends up getting the short end of the stick. Give that lady a happy ending, already!

Motoyasu is a truly odd choice to basically build an episode around, since we're probably only going to get like ten, ten-minute episodes this season before signing off for several more years. He's already with this chapter gotten more attention than anyone from Eminence in Shadow.

I wonder if Cyd in his masked John Smith guise will ever face off against Vanir.

and Tanya, as her ahoge-sporting companion, must also be one (though with wings magically hidden).

The joke actually goes deeper than that, since Tanya does have wings - specifically, her Silver Wings Assault Badge, the medal she's wearing on her uniform. And the hole Motoyasu made in the roof of the animal pen could be a call-out to a similar hole Motoyasu made in a building in his series.

Amongst other points:

• Julius popping out of the curtain in the nurse's office could be a reference to spoiler[his condition at the end of Re:Zero s3].

• Cid is actually present in the class 1 scene, but you have to look for him carefully. (He's behind the piano.) This is a call-out both to him trying to be inconspicuous in his civilian identity and that he is actually a masterful piano player.

• Motoyasu has been added to the OP, so he's apparently now a regular.

• One of the posters on the wall is a school newspaper talking about the zombie pasta incident. But who's writing the newspaper?

I love how the casts' fearsome reputation and quirks has convinced Shadow Garden that they're related to the Cult of Diablos and making them get more actively involved in the plot. And Cid (and Delta) are clueless.

That Gamma fall was everything.

Also, Tripe Asami Seto!!!

I loved seeing everyone in their ski fashions, especially Puck with his completely unnecessary goggles and Neumann's racoon-tail cap (why do the twins say he needs to suffer more?). And Aqua finally getting a moment to have exhilarating fun without immediately being punished for it somehow. Also Subaru and Betty's ongoing love-fest even while rolling along in a snowball.

You could see that Darkness snowball joke coming, but it was still good for a laugh. Plus, she looks just so happy in it Laughing

The cleverness of the production team shows off again in this episode, since the snowy setting allows it to integrate in references to three of the four core series: the Winter Shogun affair from KONOSUBA s1 ep7 is most obvious, but the writing also references Tanya's training regimen for her battalion (ep 4 of her series) and the "Memory Snow" OVA from Re:Zero (set timeline-wise in the middle of the first season).

Neumann did have the coonskin cap, but Grantz was the one the twins said had to suffer more. Not 100% sure on this one, but my guess is that Grantz is the subject of this because he's the most put-upon of the named characters in Saga of Tanya (though that shows more in the novels than the anime).

Also agreed that Darkness in the giant snowball was the most predictable of jokes but still very funny because of how much she seemed to be enjoying it.

Oops. You know, I didn't even mix up their names, amazingly enough since I don't know Tanya's cast very well. Rather, I remembered it as being Neumann, cap and all, despite that not being what I actually saw. Don't ever call me up as a witness to anything, or I'll put the wrong person in prison!
