I heard that one problem that anime clubs face are Divx anime. Particulary College Anime Clubs let alone anime clubs that are not apart of an HighSchool/College. Anime Fans can download anime and it would be like "What's the point in joining an anime club when you can download anime off the net."
Sometimes I think that is what effects our anime club attendence albeit it's slowly but surley growing.

Digisubs are probably hurting turnout a bit, but I don't think that's the only drag on your club's attendance. Anime's a lot easier to find than it was just a few years ago, and when all you need to do is turn on Cartoon Network or drop by Best Buy, high school/college anime clubs don't really fill that "gateway" role anymore.

You're going to have to compete with the other free anime alternatives, so point out a few club advantages (big-screen venue, socializing with other fans, anime that's not on TV here). Of course, some folks would rather turn on CN or hide in their rooms and watch a poorly-translated bootleg on a tiny computer screen anyways. Concentrate on the less stubborn people. ^_^

There's still a place for anime clubs, but you'll going to have to try harder to attract people each week.

The point of anime club shouldnt just be watching anime, it should also be about gathering with people who have similar intrests. try engaging in anime related activities that arent simply watching anime. Disucussions about shows and the future of anime are/should be considered important topics, so when you arent watching why not talk about it? The only reason I would have to attend a club that was doing nothing more than showing anime would (90%of the time) be providing anime for people with less exposure to watch since most everything that an anime club would be likely to show would be something I've likely seen. If all you do is show what I've seen and Im not bringing the tapes/dvds why do I need to be there? Unless there is soem good discussion going on or some other, more inventive activity is going on I dont, and wont.

Yeah I know those stubborn people. I run a club, and we are more a venue, we show a lot of stuff, most of it new, but now that I have all the power (vicious coup when the old prez went off to grad school) I plan on showing some older stuff that isn't common. A big advantage for clubs is a collection or collections held by members that can get pretty wide. It helps if you refuse to lend people anything current. It really hurts attendance if all the new stuff has been seen by everyone. See too if you can get a projector to display anime on. Many colleges have ways to rent them, and some have groups that will lend them to official clubs. Watching Naruto on a 80 inch screen will draw people from their small monitors.

We show anime using a projector/screen. Thing about our anime club is that we have people of all ages(11 yrs and up. Some even older than me.). We're not part of an school/college. We do talk about different anime that we have seen. Another thing is that most of our members know about anime because of The Cartoon Network and whatever other channel that they watch anime on. So some of the stuff that we watch maybe old to alot of anime fans but to our members it's brand new. Some projects that we are trying to get off the ground are the Club T-shirt(s), Trips to conventions and maybe even a video game day.

I think that everyone that can should try and go to an anime club if they have a good one in there area. I don't go to my school's because it is not really an anime club, I guess the prinicpal made the call it the "Cartoon" Club or something, so a lot of the professionalism is taken away, plus add in the fact that I go to a really big high school that is as big as most colleges and the teaches don't get to bond with, much less care about most of the students at my school, so it's hard to go to a club that is serious about what they do (except Student Council and the Christian club, both of which I am in). I'm thinking about starting a non-school indie-film club that would show a lot of anime though, so all hope is not lost yet.

You said a good anime club. Could you define a good anime club in your own opinion?

I have no problem with me. It's a great way for an anime fan to sample and experience other anime's without laying down cash for something they may not like.

However I dont reccomend downloading tons apon tons of it. Just enough to give a general basis of the anime.

well ya know...this sounds exactly like the music industry and kazaa lol so yeah i dunno whether this applies to anime or not but we always just say "buy the best download the rest" so if a show is really good people will actually want to support it instead of just downloading it Anime smile

I really dont have a problem with Divx aside for their poor quality. I generally buy the anime I download anyway with the exception of Rurouni Kenshin.

I don't mind DivX format, of course when I rent then rip it myself (until I get the funds to buy it, which I actually do about once a month). on average, I can do a 25min episode @ 150 - 233mb with no noticable loss.

If they where really interested in an anime club, they would still go regardless of it being downloadable or not.. afterall, it's about being able to talk to people with the same interests as you isn't it? I'm thinking of starting one at my school, but I doubt there's enough people Sad

As a way of possibly attracting more people to your club, try this. A lot of otaku share similar hobbies like video games and roleplaying.

An investment of about $25 will buy you the core rules for BE/SM (Big Eyes/ Small Mouth), a generic anime roleplaying system. It has rules for running a campaigne based on just about any kind of anime you can throw at it. So not only would you have the attraction of showing anime not readily seen, but you can also boast "Come join our original anime storyline! Want Catgirls? We got Catgirls. Want roaming samurai? We got roaming Samurai. Want angsty teens in massive mecha? We got that too!"

I dunno how feasible this is for you, but hey, it's an idea.

*Only wished everyone knew how difficult it was not to start on a fullblown Roleplaying tirade...*

Umm... why not kenshin? I mean, it's 4-5 eps per volume and box sets are coming out (that is, if you're just waitint gofr box sets, then thats cool)

I view them like fansubs... Okay until licensed for distribution. Then they should be made unavailable.

I use them to filter anime into categories... stuff I'll buy, and stuff I won't.
