I am 17 and in my HS, people think I am the strangest thing in school because I like anime. I really believe that in a school of 1500 students, I am the only one that likes anime. People look at it as some weird cult thing that only freaks like.I've tried to explain it but the people just look at me strange. I need advice
HOW DO I EXPLAIN ANIME TO NORMAL PEOPLE.

Well, lets see how you are presenting yourself. According to you last line, you are drawing a difference between yourself and "NORMAL PEOPLE". What are the circumstances of these confrontations?
Most people would consider anime like Pokemon and Yui-Gi-Oh! pretty mainstream. What anime are you presenting people with?

Urotsukidoji!!!
Hajime no Ippo
any thing by Miyazaki
Cowboy Beebop
Escaflowne
Those are examples of what you could show them.
But my advice, if you have allready tried to explain to them what you think is so great about anime, and they just don't get it: Screw 'em!!. Seriously, if they don't like, don't worry about. Don't let their limited views on the world affect your enjoyment of anime.
Oh, and I have come to realize that there is at least one anime for everybody. Anime is such a varied media that I guarantee that there is something that will appeal to them.

This is the best reply here. They may not like Grave... they may find it boring... but at the very least they will come to respect anime as a serious medium.
If you're more interested on "hooking" them on Anime, Bebop would be a much better bet.

I've hooked about six or seven of my friends (who ranged from having a passing interest in anime to being Toonami fanboys to outright hating it) with a nice triple-dose of Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, & Evangelion.

I didn't think that anime is still in its "cult" state....ah well, I guess it depends on the other's view.......
Really though, if you want to impress them with anime, you have to know what THEY like to watch and then find an anime series that similar to it......like say if they like watching The Simpsons, then maybe something of a comedic nature would suffice.....I would definitely stay away from the CONTROVERSIAL stuff though (y'know what I'm talkin' about) since it might turn them off......and maybe not the experimental stuff for first timers (lain, anyone) unless they're into that....
Otherwise, walk your own path....and hold your own nuts with pride, otaku grasshopper.......

Put some mind control drugs in their food.
Let's see, when I was in High School oh some many years ago, I got a couple people hocked on to Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell. Then again, tell them about the stuff on AS without coming off as a crazied fanboy/girl. But, some people ranks anime right up there with Bugs and Mickey and can be hard to turn them over. Then again, I was the oddball of my High School.
