So, about 3 weeks ago, I was bored so I started surfing around for games to play during work... (shh!)
I dug up a page on Shogi (Japanese Chess), but after looking at the rules and not being very impressed, I noticed a link from it to another site (http://www.playgo.to/interactive/) that taught a game called "Go". Curious (and bored), I followed it and found it to be quite an interesting game. So I studied that site for a while, and learned the basics of the game.. and then started looking for places to play the game, and found an AI program called Aya (http://plaza15.mbn.or.jp/~yss/) and proceeded to get trashed by it, even though it's fairly weak by human standards. So, I went elsewhere looking for information about Go, as well as where I could play.. and noticed two sites that had games of Go. The first is Yahoo Games (games.yahoo.com) but you have to be registered with Yahoo to play. The second is the Internet Go Server (igs.joyjoy.net). IGS is my preferred method of playing, as the client is much less bulky, it has title match re-plays and quite a few helpful people (whereas Yahoo is less than friendly).. Since then, I've played a number of games against Aya and a handful of players, but I'm worried about messing up.. although I still lose to Aya, I've steadily improved, and can now occasionally beat it on equal footing, or with minor handicaps (as compared to losing with a 9 handicap my first week!) So, does anyone else play Go, and if so, where? (Psst -- Plug Time: If you're on WorldIRC, there's a Go channel that's just starting there.. irc.worldirc.org 6667, channel #go -- We're looking for people, both new and experienced at Go, willing to learn, teach, or whatever. And yes, I'm aware of Hikaru no Go. I'll be picking up DVDs 1-4 at AX ^_^) |

If you live in MA (USA) and are near Somerville then you may have heard about the Go club in Davis Sq. It's a key club, if I remember correctly. Might be worth checking out.

I know how to play Go. I'm terrible at it, though.
THE GAME IS TOO FREAKIN' OPEN-ENDED. And that just makes my mind go insane. "You mean... you can.. place the... stones... ANYWHERE?" I'm used to Rube Goldberg-esque board-game contraptions, or hyper-fast button-mashing fighting games; my media-soaked mind is not suitable for a game as cerebral as Go. GO! GO! TANK is one of the worst video games ever, by the way. |

I read an interesting Samurai story in Hagakure (yes my handle comes from a book. The title Hagakure means "In the Shadow of the Leaves." Its part of the reason why I study Kendo) about a man who had his leg chopped off and walked back to the house of his assailiant with only a Go board to prop his leg back up. That's spirit!
I have Go on my computer, but I have absolutley no idea od how it is played. My father explained it to me as trying to build a wall of the markers. Could anyone explain it? Another fun game is Chodan. Its that game with the dice (chodan means "even odd" in Japanese) in which the players bet on whether the dice under the cup will be two evens or two odds. In Rurouni Kenshin Sano looses all his money to Chodan. ^_^ |
