What is your favorite Shonen manga and why?
For me it's Rurouni Kenshin because the plot, characters, and fighting scenes are deep. The characters don't charge their power over multiple pages and unleash a huge energy wave. It's more realistic but not too realistic, so it's cool. And the characters just rock. All have their own detailed past and motivations. Villians aren't just stopped because they are bad, but because their lifestyle and worldview clashes with the protagonists.

Right now? D. Gray-man. The characters are really likable, even the characters I don't really like (does that make sense?). I'm not always happy with the pacing of the story (the current arc is too long and feels drawn out, though it gets nowhere near as bad as some other shounen series I've read), but I try to ignore that.
Other favourites: Rurouni Kenshin, Detective Conan, Get Backers and Fullmetal Alchemist.

I'm not a big Shonen person, but there's some Shonen titles I like.
First of all...Shonen Sunday>Shonen Jump. Hehehehe.
Detective Conan is one of my favorite manga, even though it's loooong. I guess the gimmick of "Can you solve the mystery before Conan does?" works, because I always find myself racing to find the culprit. lol.
Ranma 1/2 is another long series, but I like the characters and the stories are very entertaining.
Yakitate! Japan is so much fun. Who knew bread-baking could be so interesting?
I've only read two volumes, but I've liked what I've read of Hayate the Combat Butler. I've also read a little bit of Eyeshield 21, and that was pretty good, even though I'm not a football fan.
I've been meaning to check out Fullmetal Alchemist. If it's ever printed in omnibus editions, I'll buy it.

For a one volume story, Sandland was awesome.

Oh boy, where to start! There's just too many shounen I like.....
Naruto is definitely my favorite though, that's for sure. Regardless of popular opinion on this forum, I really think that Naruto is one of the best shounen series out there. Fullmetal Alchemist is for sure better, Ruroni Kenshin maybe, One Piece comes close, but that's about it. There's a reason it's so popular you know.
Well, that aside......
The reason why it's my favorite is primarily because of it's characters. The typical strength of a good shounen series always seems to be in it's characters, but I think this is especially so in Naruto. Each and every one has some sort of dark past and some sort of issue they have to deal with linked to that dark past, and their motivations and way of living, their "Nindo" mind you, has just such a powerfully inspirational feel to me in how that way of living is their strength to overcome those particular issues. I think it has such a relevance to our own lives, as the typical shounen themes tend to anyways, but I think a lot of the problems they have to overcome are things that a lot of people can identify with and relate to, and that's what I think makes it so special right there.
Naruto's character is one of my all-time favorite leads because of this, because even though he may be one of the weaker characters physical strength-wise, he has one of the strongest wills of any of them, which in the long run is what helps him develop into a much stronger character as the series goes on, which makes for some really chilling heroic moments for him throughout the series.
Then there's the plotline. Well, it may not be all that particularly strong at first, but there's enough mystery and intrigue there that at the very least keeps you wondering about those particular things anyways until (much, much latter have you) all that mystery and intrigue comes together in what will eventually (and trust me, it really will ) become quite the insanely exciting and dark plotline! It really reminds me of how Harry Potter's storyline is structured in this way.
Other notable favorites: Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Bleach, D.Gray-Man, Claymore, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragonball, Hunter X Hunter.

I'm not a huge Shonen fan either, but I love Cyborg 009, King of Bandits : Jing, and Sgt. Frog a lot. None of that never-ending 20+vols. stuff for me, thanks.

Fullmetal Alchemist. I'd go so far as to say this is my favorite overall, not just in Shonen. There are so many reasons that this series has become as popular as it has. The story takes many, darker turns than the anime was allowed to and has benefitted immensely for it. I am especially looking forward to the next volume
in which we find out what really happened to our favorite military crew at Ishbal
I'll admit this is one of the few series that I'll search down scanlations in addition to buying the hardcopy because I can't wait to find out what happens. in the latest release from Japan, things aren't looking too good for anybody (more so than usual)!
I also loved Kenshin (I wish the anime had been able to stick to the storyline) and Death Note.

As far as standard Shounen fare goes, my current favorite would be Claymore. Everyone should check out the Claymore thread.
I'm also a die-hard fan of Beck, one of my all-time favorites, even thought it's ridiculously long. Jing:King of Bandits, Parasyte, Qwan, Tsubasa, Urusei Yatsura are also others I'm fond of.

Hikaru-no-Go. It's a little slow, since it's about a Japanese board game, but you can see that the main character is maturing throughout the story. He started off as a young, jumpy kid and he's becoming a steely-eyed young man. I just want to see if he'll ever be able to reach Toya and have his fated rematch...

One Piece. Not a lot of titles stand up to this one in my book. It's not so hard for me to explain because I like the Toriyama type style such as becoming stronger, but I think that Oda Eiichiro really knows how to develop his characters and let the reader know how they feel and sense the comradery between them all. Plus the fights are kickbutt style anyway, what can you expect from a shonen series like that?

Rurouni Kenshin is the manga that got me into manga and the shônen that got me into shônen. What I admired the most about this series is that not only was it incredibly well-written but also that the author absolutely loves his job - and it shows. Nearly every character had a purpose in the plot and was still engaging right down to the designs (which were pretty unique!). I also liked that the manga was almost entirely driven by the theme of "redemption" instead of the usual shônen fare of tsuyoku naritai.
I usually like the light-hearted, fun shônen titles more than the serious ones, though. Other favorites are Prince of Tennis, Gintama, and Mr. Fullswing. I am most definitely a Jump addict …

Look at me, posting in a shounen manga thread :p
I don't read much (something that will come to no surprise to people who've seen me around here, I'm sure), but I really like two of the Gundam Wing manga: Episode Zero and Battlefield of Pacifists. Both do some really interesting things when it comes to character development, especially Episode Zero.
The other GW manga I can pass on though.

I like Hayate The Combat Butler, as it isn't as annoying and drawn out (literally too) as other shonen. It has clean art, funny story, and it doesn't have hella long tournaments.

I really like the Ranma 1/2 series. It is because I like the plot of the story.
But my favorite shonen manga is definitely the YuGiOh manga. The story explains more than the anime and has more of a plot. Plus, the characters are more developed in the manga.

I always try to steer myself away from the childishness of shonen series, but then can never do it, because god...they're so good! Shonens seem to deliver the best characters and character relationships in my book, with just the right amount of humor and epic battles to make me drool.
Okay, I don't really drool when I read shonen, but you get the idea.
One Piece comes to mind as probably the best shonen out there, and it's thoroughly recognized (at least in JAPAN) for this....but at the moment my favorite is another Jump title: Muhyo and Roojii's Magic Law Consultation Office.
I forget what they call it in English. They just started translating this. I picked it up while I was in Japan and became hooked. The shame about it is, like some shonen titles (Katekyo Hitman Reborn! comes to mind), the story doesn't pick up for awhile. In this case, the entire first manga is just a bunch of episodic little adventures. I cringed to see the review for it here on ANN, because personally I think it's a great series once the storyline actually develops. I CRIED THROUGH LIKE, ALL OF VOLUME FOUR, OKAY?
Oh shonen. How I love you.
