I have been saving to buy the Evangelion Box set, but I just recently read in Newtype that a new box set is being released. Has anyone else seen it and can give me more info, should I buy the box set or wait. Is Gainax planning on releasing a new revised box set of Evangelion. The thing I saw is red and plastic and I think it just holds the movies. Any help would be appreciated.

That's the Renewal box set that was released in Japan. It contains all 26 episodes and both movies that have been digitally restored. From what I hear, the thing sold out. But it probably wouldn't do you any good unless you fully understand Japanese and have a dvd player capable of playing R2 DVDs.

The only box set out in America is the 8 disc release from from ADV.

From what I have heard in another tread on the forums that there were only 500 copies produced so it is next to near impossible to find. Unless of course you have some personal contacts in Japan. I highly doubt that it will make it to the US because the cost for a publisher to pick it up will be incredibly high. The reason why ADV turned down the movies is because it would have cost them as much to get 10 series. Image how much it would cost to get a whole 26 episode series of Eva.

Alright, so should I go ahead and buy the ADV box set? I just don't want to buy it then turn around and them re-release it.

Yes, you should buy the ADV boxset because it is highly unlikely that the Renewal project will ever make its way to US shores. Surf around the web for the best prices if you are looking for it cheap.

And by "cheap," if its far less than $100, be wary, as it could very well be a bootleg. In stores, the box set retails for around $130. If you come across a 3 disc set, it's a bootleg.

Well I did buy the ADV released Evangelion 8 disc boxset off Ebay for $80. So if you look there you should be able to find a legitiment copy of it for a cheap price. Just watch out for the 3 disc set, because like Swordfish said, that is defiently a bootleg.

You might want to hold off on buying it. Recently, ADV has re-released volume 7 with both the TV and home-video versions of the episodes and will be doing the same with volume 8 in less then 2 months. It is likely that ADV will re-release the box set with these 2 updated volumes sometime in the near future.

A few things to clear up-

1. The reason why ADV didn't pick the movies up wasn't directly because they were too expensive. It's just they would of bought around 13 seperate series with that kind of money.

2. ADV have a LOT more money now, and are producing a Live Action Evangelion movie. I would think some kind of renewal release would tie into that somewhere

3. ADV have a tendancy to well, re-release stuff, iwht improvements. Pretty much, people thought it'd be impossible for them to even get the Home Video versions. Same goes with a remastered version of say, Robotech. Yet notoriously enough, both have happened.

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the current set, but don't rule out the possibility of them picking it up in the not too distant future.

Digging back into the August posts.

The Renewal of Evangelion boxset is only avalible in R2 at this moment. ADV supposedly has the rights to the Renewal, but have no plans to release it anytime soon. It will probably come out when the live action movie does. But it would probably be the tv episodes only, since Manga still has the rights to the Eva movies.

Just to let everyone know, I think they have started releasing the renewal versions stateside. I was at Best Buy the other night and saw a DVD with episodes 21-23 that they're calling Director's Cut Resurrection, and from the back it seems to be a remastered version. Here's ADV's website http://www.advfilms.com/catalog/catalog_item.asp?c=&f=N&s=31&i=71&v=1023 for people to look at. If anyone can clarify this for me I'd be appreciative, but going off of what I read from the back of the DVD, it seems to be the renewal version. Not sure though.

Nope, that is the Directors Cut of the TV series which was out some time ago in Japan and ADV is releasing the last 6 episodes of it here. The Renewal Project is something completly different because it has remastered video and audio. On the other hand the Directors Cut has new scenes.

Yes, get the boxset and, while you are at it, get the Director's Cut DVDs to go along with it. Than watch it all over and over again and love it.

ADV either lied or was mistaken. The DVD does in fact state that the episodes "are not only re-mastered, but re-vised and re-edited with new footage," however the episodes weren't digitally restored.
