Hi, Been a while,

Quick Question, I am looking for information on the type of people who become Manga Authors/Anime Directors, particularly the more potentially controvertial stuff like GTO, Earth Girl Arjuna, or Battle Royale (Not a Anime, but you get the idea).
I'm working on a paper on Japanese culture and I'm lookiing for stuff on social critisim in the arts. I've also heard that Manga/Anime is often a refugee for those who don't want to be part of "mainline" Japanese Corporate Life.

Thanks in advance,

Nani?

Hi and thanks,

Let me clarify. I'm looking for informantion on the type of people who tend to get into Anime/Manga rather then information on specific artists. Just like Rock Musicians and RPG game designers have a "profile" I'm assumeing there is a bit of a profile on the type of people who get involved in Anime/Manga.

Thanks Again,

Nani?

I always thought that manga-kas just loved drawing and writing stories. Put two and two together. You're right about the part where you say that they don't want to be the "mainline" of Japanese life. Most manga-kas didn't do very well in school and dropped out of college to work for a animation studio or study under famous manga-kas, like Rumiko Takahashi studing under Kazuo Koike.

Manga creators in general are low paid, underappreciated, introverted work-a-holics. They generally get their start in publishing houses or as someone's assistant.

Sometimes, they start doing their own comics (doujinshi) based on their own or other people's worlds.

Most young artists and older artists(aborad or otherwise) I know have really only 2 things in common.

1. ) Work-a-holic, type A personalities. These people work to the exclusion of everything else in their life quite often. Most of the people I work with have either been a vicitim of failed marriages/relationships and don't really maintain relationships outside of a work-related atmosphere.

2.) Under paid for 99% of their life, unless they hit it. This is thankless and hard work.

There is no archetype for creators of anime/manag or comics/movies.
