The latest edition of Diamond Previews (for July '04 releases) has an interesting listing:
"NEON GENESIS EVANGELION RENEWAL VOL 1 DVD (MR)SRP: $34.98"
Keith at Manga had mentioned to me that ADV had received some new material. I thought he might have meant the director's cut stuff, but he also said they're working on another Eva release with ADV (which I assume would include the movies).
So it all makes sense until I call him a few minutes ago to ask about the Diamond listing: "It's not ours."
*shrug*
I guess this is just an ADV thing, maybe with the movies being tacked on at the end of this wave. Regardless, it sure sounds like there's more Eva on the way. Again.

That's 'cuz Evangelion is to ADV what a dairy cow is to Tom Green. But it's quite brilliant how Gainax and ADV get a certain portion of the Evangelion fanbase to buy essentially the same episodes several times over on the same video format. Then again, I am the one with several copies of Terminator 2 on DVD, so there is a certain "hello kettle, you're black" aspect to my amusement.

I love Evangelion to bits...it's one of the milestones of anime, it's a true classic, it's great fun to watch, needs to be in everyone's collection, the sort of show that if you don't see it you're pathetic as an anime fan, yadda yadda yadda and on into oblivion...
...but there is no way in hell I'm dropping down another $200+ on it. Uh-uh. No. Sorry ADV, sorry GAiNAX, but I'd rather live with my jittery first-run DVDs with overlays on the first volume than waste (that's right, waste) money on the same show just for a slightly prettier picture. Tough luck. Try putting out some new shows if you want my money.
If people want to blow their money on this thing (if indeed it's true), then be my guest. If you don't yet have Evangelion in your collection, and this thing comes out, I will pester you into getting this superior-quality release. But as far as I'm concerned...I really couldn't care less.

Yeah, I'd wait until something was officially confirmed before taking this rumour and running off with it.

Even if this particular listing is false, I'm pretty confident we'll see some kind of new Eva release this year. So if you've bought the VHS, DVD, and Director's Cut, yeah, you'll be paying for those final episodes a fourth time.

I knew I was holding off on buying the Eva dvds for a reason. I've been hoping that the Renewal dvds would come here, but I was thinking it wouldn't be until the Eva movie came out. I finally got an excuse now.

I really don't understand why people are so upset over ADV rereleasing it. Yeah, sure, we all paid for our box sets, but what ADV released on dvd and vhs at the time were the only things they had avalible to them. Now comes 2003/2004 and Japan rereleases it with the special extras. People are pissed now that ADV is going to do the same, when we should be lucky they're even bothering to bring it over. They didn't HAVE to rerelease it, and the fans don't HAVE to go out and buy it over again. I'm happy to have the option to buy it.

I hope there is a re-release / remastered edition...
I have not purchased (or seen past disc 1) this show yet.
I just got into anime full on recently, and have been into current stuff.

I'm so glad I held off on buying it... Now if it just contains all that it's hyped up to be.

I hate to admit it, but I bought the Director's Cut DVDs being well aware of an inevitable Renewal release. If this is true, then I'll certainly be buying every disc of this release as well.
But I might have a buyer for my old discs anyway, so it works out.
It's interesting that Manga claimed to be working with ADV on something. If this listing is accurate and Renewal is being released, then my assumption would be that ADV and Manga are working together to release the Renewal edition of the Eva movie. Regardless of the specifics, this is a little surprising given the history between the two companies.

ROTFL! My sentiments exactly. I was waiting for them to release the remastered edition. I hadn't bought it yet when they announced the R2 re-release, so I just sat tight.
Patience is a virtue, it seems.
