Anime Study Magazine has kicked off their list of 50 essential anime. A new title will be added about every week with an accompanying review until the whole round has been made.

"This unranked, unnumbered list should not be seen as a definitive 'best-of' compilation, but as a subjective and uncompromising alternative collection of Japanese animated gems sifted out by an eccentric group of anime-lovers."

Well, they're certainly on the right track with their first two titles. I hope they give Angel's Egg its proper moment in the spotlight (as implied by them).

Their criteria might be a bit vague (i.e. "shedding the prosaic trends of popular media," etc., etc.), but interesting nonetheless.

I still think that list is going to offend some people. They may have substituted "best" with "essential" but in essence, they're still trying to list the 50 anime that they think should be on anyone's list or should be watched.

But so far, those first 2 titles are right on. I'm interested to see how the list develops. It may get a little ugly.

If the banners above & below the article are any indication, looks as though KareKano, Totoro, Perfect Blue, FLCL, & Haibane Renmei will all appear on the list at some point. Seem like reasonable choices, and that's one of my own personal favourites (Haibane Renmei) already on there if such is indeed the case.

*Looking at the top 100 Anime list* Well it's good see Last Exile,Triggun,S-CRYED,Hellsing within the top 50. (Hmm, no mention of DBZ whatsoever Confused ..) Even a "mediocre" series like Gungrave made the list. (And to think that Toboe thought it sucked. Wink ) Unless i overlooked the list there are still a few great titles missing. but i guess in time the list will change.

The older stuff is still among the best.
