What's With all the Sheiks?
Eerie coincidence, but I actually had been pondering this exact question lately (it shows up in BL a bit, too, but it's not hard to imagine it originated in genre romance). Glad to finally have an answer, and I hope this was as much fun to write as it was to read!

It was! And I'm glad you had fun reading it. Very Happy (And that I could answer your sheik question. Edith Hull has a lot to answer for.)

I'm really glad for this article, I've noticed a lot of harlequin manga is offered "free" on subscription services like Kindle Unlimited, and knowing nothing about it, I've always been mildly curious if they were some weird series of OEL manga or even legit at all (the amateurish lettering on some of the titles doesn't do it any favors). Now that I understand it better, I'm going to have to try one next time I see one that catches my eye.

I started reading Harlequin manga back in 2017. They certainly are a step up from shoujo manga. The translations though are kinda iffy. Confused

For the win!! Really great article. I have enjoyed the manga adaptations for Harlequin books, nice, short, fluff. I have always wished Chiho Saito’s other romance manga would be picked up. Many of them are only 3 or less volumes. I picked up several of her manga from a Japanese bookstore in the late 90s.

I never thought I'd see KJ Charles, one of my favourite people on the planet and whom I miss sharing a laugh and a pint with very much, mentioned on ANN. I always knew you had great taste Rebecca Very Happy

Fantastic article, incredibly well researched and fun to read. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did!

I assume you're referencing the Urban Fantasy Honey Badger series by Shelly Laurenston?

I was indeed. Smile Paranormal romance knows how to push the envelope.

If KJ Charles wrote instructions for putting together a toaster, I would read them - absolutely one of my favorite authors! And wait, do you know KJ Charles? Because I'm having a major nerd freakout at the very thought!

I would absolutely read that toaster manual, I'm sure it'd be hilarious! And useful too, of course Smile
I do know her and love her very much <3 (I'm mentioned a few times in the acknowledgements of a few books, as well as Cat's, so if you look at both you can verify that's me ;- ) I don't live nearby anymore unfortunately but she's still one of my dearest friends. Every time I see her mentioned I feel joyful because people are reading and appreciating her work! She deserves all the fangirling and praise Very Happy

I have no idea what you mean. I mean there's totally not dragon shifters getting it on, angels and demons getting it on, other were creatures getting it on, nope....not at all. *pushes his kindle with the Psy Changling & Fallen Angels series on it under the covers*. What? o_O

I had thought it was a truth universally acknowledged that that was a Jane Austin reference, but... yowza. Shocked

This was a rollicking good read! Laughing Though apparently my conception of desert romances is very skewed; the few manga versions I’ve read push a lot more for the harem and solidarity among women angle, and I have no idea if that holds true across the majority of the subgenre or not! (Though it would be nice if it did.)

Also, I might be mistaken, but I have the vague recollection that Rebecca used to work or was tangentially connected to some kind of publishing arm that specialized in romance novels? But I honestly might be mixing her up with another very well-read Internet personality from my corner of the net. Embarassed

Nope, though I have taught a class in romance novels a couple of times. Smile I just read a lot.

And speaking of reading, Neverwhere, I am so glad that KJ Charles is as wonderful a person as her books suggest! Seriously, Proper English and The Ratcatcher's Daughter are two of my all-time favorites, but I've never read one of her books that I didn't like.
