Oh my gosh, they did it again! Amazing.
As before, my thanks for all the explanations, as someone who knows nothing about football but loves seeing two fandoms converge like this. The amount of knowledge that went into this is really impressive! For completion's sake, a few references which were missed: 0:00 - The opening bars of this song homage Haruka Kanata by Asian Kung-Fu Generation, the second opening song to Naruto, with a notably similar structure. After the fishing scene it transitions to a more unique melody. 0:03 - The logo is a reference to Mob Psycho 100 Season II 0:13 - The golden multi-armed statue references Netero's "100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva" technique from Hunter X Hunter. 0:48 - The general design of the bears and the image of three of them stacked on top of each other references the Cartoon Network show We Bare Bears. |

I don't think the Chargers have much room to mock the Bills for those 4 straight Super Bowl losses, considering they've been to precisely one Super Bowl in their entire history (in the 1994 season, the year immediately following those 4 Bills losses), and lost it 49-26 to the 49ers. Can't lose 4 Super Bowls if you don't reach 4 Super Bowls!
That player is supposed to be former Packers QB and current Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, given the #8 on the jersey. Kind of a "looking on in awe at the sights of New York" moment. Rodgers wore #12 with the Packers, but that number had been retired by the Jets in honor of their legendary QB, Joe Namath, who led the franchise to victory in their only Super Bowl appearance, in the 1969 season. Namath offered to let them unretire the number, but Rodgers opted to go with #8, the number he wore in college at Cal-Berkley. |

Eh, I'd rather be the loser team who got thumped in one Super Bowl than the loser team who lost an unprecedented FOUR in a row (the first one by one point), that sort of thing is soul-destroying for a fan. This video wasn't as good as last year's but still pretty enjoyable all the same. The crack about the Detroit Lions was very funny. |

I think part of why the Bills Super Bowl streak is so infamous is because a team good enough to make it to four Super Bowls in a row really has no excuse not to win it all at least once. Yeah the Chargers only made it to one Super Bowl, but they got blown out, which in some ways is less painful. Meanwhile, the Bills' most infamous Super Bowl loss came down to one kick. They came insanely close, only to lose at the last moment. That stings more than getting buried by 24 points. It's similar to how they've done studies showing that among Olympic athletes, Bronze medalists feel a greater sense of accomplishment than Silver medalists. Logically, losing by a lot should hurt more than losing by a hair, but that's not how most people think. |

Watching this again in fullscreen has allowed me to pick up on a few more things:
0:19 - The cranes may reference the Titans' new stadium plan. 0:27 - The "meaningless accomplishment" banners like "mentioned in a Lizzo song" = a dig at the Vikings' lack of championships; like the Bills, they've been to and lost 4 Super Bowls. 0:31 -- "Family Trust Respect" on the slot machine = "F*** the Raiders." ** The Raiders, along with the Chiefs and Broncos, are in the same division as the Chargers and play them twice a year. Despite the Raiders' lack of on-field success in the last 20 years (their last division title and playoff win came in 2002, and they have 2 winning seasons since then), they're often ranked as those three teams' most-hated rival, likely due to the antics and attitudes of the team's ownership and fanbase. 0:35 -- the ducks and the uniform refer to Justin Herbert's college career as an Oregon Duck. 0:50 - The bears on the back wall reference past QBs Mitchell Trubisky (a highly-drafted disappointment who preceded Fields) and one of his old tweets, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman (who did reach and lose a Super Bowl in 2006), and Jim McMahon (who was at QB for Chicago's only Super Bowl championship, in 1985). The guy in the foreground is likely Bears GM Ryan Poles. Other Bears jerseys include past superstars Walter Payton (#34), Devin Hester (#23), and William "The Refrigerator" Perry (#72 -- the 2 isn't visible, but the boxy design gives it away). The "Beware of Brick" refers to the ivy-covered walls at Wrigley Field, which the Bears shared with MLB's Chicago Cubs until 1970. (And also Poles' "Rebuild Brick by Brick" motto.) The "Decatur" sticker refers to the Bears originally being founded as the Decatur Staleys. . 0:52 - The "Snack Bar" at lower left references a speech by former Jets coach Rex Ryan. The "New York Sack Exchange" references the Jets' defensive lines from the early 1980s. 1:05 - the gambling disclaimer takes a shot at the Detroit Lions' "Questionable Draft Picks (MI)" 1:08 - Several Aaron Rodgers scandals, habits, or questionable decisions on the to-do list, including "Another Pat McAfee Interview," "Tweet Vaguely (about future plans / being traded)", "Do my own [vaccine] research," and "Schedule Ayahuasca Appointment." Chart at lower right may reference Rodgers' attempts to get coaches and players moving between teams to suit his preferences. Buildings are shown with Packers "cheesehead" ornaments. 1:14 - The "Restroom --> " sign likely refers to an incident during a primetime game a couple years ago. 1:35 - "Fantasy Treasure Resort" - see "Family Trust Respect," above. EDIT based on comments elsewhere: * The $ amount refers to Jimmy G.'s salary and other financial hits the Raiders took in some of their player transactions. * The string of numbers after the date = the Raiders' recent season records. * "Not redeemable for wedding invite" -- see here. * "Voucher not valid for full season" = a dig at Garappolo's injury history. * The QR code actually works, and brings up a page saying "Chargers fans click here" / "Raiders fans click here" -- doing so directs one to buying Chargers tickets, and "How to get a job," respectively. 1:44 - New Broncos head coach Sean Payton removed QB Russell Wilson's private office in the team's facilities, a privilege he had also enjoyed in his first season in Denver and in previous years with the Seattle Seahawks. The "Modern Bathroom Monthly" magazine references his Denver residence. The smiley face may reference Wilson's relentless optimism.
After that 20-19 loss to the Giants, the Bills' next three defeats allowed them to experience the other end of the spectrum, losing 37-24 to the then-Redskins, then 52-17 and 30-13 to the Cowboys. The '90 Giants had a defense run by legendary evil overlord Bill Belichick, the '91 Redskins were considered one of the lowkey best teams of all time, and the '92-'93 Cowboys were money-charged superteams that helped inspire the NFL to institute the salary cap the following year. It certainly hurts for the team and the fandom, but there's no great shame in losing against competition like that. And in the long run, it's quite rare for teams to lose a Super Bowl and return to it the following year. Only one squad has pulled it off in the 30 years since the 1993 Bills did so: the 2018 Patriots*, which makes Buffalo's run of 4 straight appearances all the more impressive. *who became the first team since the undefeated 1972 Dolphins to actually win a Super Bowl after losing it the previous year. |
