Battle Royale wasn't banned in Japan. It was almost banned, and not because of the violence in itself, but because the teen violence was a concern to politicians in light of heinous youth crimes which were going on in Japan. (But apparently a cult which stocks up on sarin to gas a subway is "ok", as long as they pay taxes.) The ratings board decided to slap an 18 rating(really rare for Japanese films) on it, but Fukasaku-san openly encouraged kids under 18 to sneak into theaters to see it. (He joked that it should have a rating barring people 50 and older from seeing it.) And an anime actually wouldn't be impossible if you've seen all the merchandise they're trying to milk out of this f*cker. The fact that it became profitable automatically destroyed any reservations about making any money off of it. (Although selling it to a U.S. studio's another story...)

It goes with the Shelf Life from 8/17. The show is written: Call Me Junkers....but it's pronounced: Call me Yoonkers. (Don't ask me what the big deal is because I don't know.)

Well, I'm glad your at least making note of the proper pronounciation. I always get annoyed when people pronounce German names wrong (ö and ü) nonwithstanding.

I remember a psychology class where a group kept getting pronounciation Jung (using the english d+zh value for [j] instead /y/) of wrong, it drove me nuts. The same of the girl who prounced Goethe GO-eth.

Well it'd be easier on all of us if they just spelled words the way they were pronounced. (It sure as hell is needed for Chinese and Hindu verbs and nouns...)

I did the 'call me Yoon-kers!" thing because I really think that that DVD cover is the worst thing I've ever seen. They have this beautiful family film and the cover is absolutely repellant, so in turn, today's Answerman pictures are mocking it. That's all. If you'll notice, even the banner has the word bubble.

Oh do I ever feel like an idiot. I managed to miss that bubble every time I've looked at the cover. I usually spot this kind of stupidity.

Of course I didn't even catch on to the name being German until I read shelf life, so I'm just having a bad week.

Ja, daß* man ist ein Arschloch.

*I learned the old orthography, so sue me.

I heard that Amrerican companies wanted to get it but that Toei for some reason isn't selling it. I don't know if this is true or not. I think that Media Blasters owns Ichi the Killer and thats got alot worse voilence compared to BR.

JET: Toei was selling, but their asking price was too high. Now they've moved on. And it's not the violence in itself that's the problem with BR, but the fact that kids are doing it.

Daniel Radcliffe and Haley Joel Osment are being considered to play Shinji Ikari? dear god! and just when i thought he couldn't be worse. who else is pondering that this movie may suck? i mean obviously it's going to be PG 13, so there's gonna be a big problem portraying all the death and destruction.

Re-read the column. The Harry Potter kid is just a rumor. Ms. Answerman was just making a joke with the Osment kid. The only thing certain about the movie is that someone wants to make it.
