Idol Group Combines Pop Tunes and Sushi Making

posted on by Bamboo Dong
Unconventional idol group Aidoru Kyoshitsu also work as sushi chefs.

The ten girls from Aidoru Kyoshitsu (Idol Classroom) might seem like any other idol singers. Ranging from ages 16 to 25, they sing, they dance, and they perform in concerts full of sugary pop tunes and frilly costumes. The difference is, when they're not performing on stage, they're making sushi.

The all-female group is produced and managed by Noriyuki Umemura, the third-generation owner of Sushi Dokoro Goichi, which occupies four floors of a building in Nagoya's Naka Ward.

Previously a singer-songwriter living in Tokyo, Umemura moved back to Nagoya six years ago, but didn't want to completely give up working in the music industry. In 2008, he held auditions for a new idol group, eventually selecting twenty members.

The girls perform songs that are mostly written by Umemura, and when they're not making sushi part-time at the restaurant, they're giving performances either in a small venue located on a different floor of the restaurant, or at shopping centers and festivals. Their second single, "Boku wa Kimi no Koi wo Shita," even reached 42nd on the music charts on August 28, according to Oricon Inc.
