This is a topic I've been meaning to start for a while now and was a bit inspired by random discussions in past topics.
First off though, this is not meant to be a fansubs vs official releases or a sub vs dub or US vs Japanese release topic so no arguing please. This is meant to be an informative topic. And yes, some of the knowledge drawn from here comes from having watched fansubs or watching rips of Japanese released DVD and BD not yet releases overseas. Please do not get hung up on that issue here. The idea of this topic is to provide somewhere we can collectively share information on what we know or noticed about the differences of a series between its TV debut and it DVD release. We know that sometimes a studio makes mistakes or is crunched for time to get a episode out so quality can suffer for an episode or so when it airs on TV or stream. But it's also not unusual for the same studio to fix or even redraw episodes for the DVD releases. Some times these changes are minor and you don't really notice. Other times they can be quite significant for better or worst depending on opinion. The things listed can be as simple or straight forward as a uncensored version or not released on TV episode to more subtle things like art touch ups and redraws or new endings or segments others may have not been aware of. This is not limited to just US released series. I'm a bit of a art/film geek when it comes to these kinds of changes so I find them interesting and hope this topic will help people out or at least amuse them to see all of the changes. For the time being I'll try to keep this up to date with each entry by editing the first post. If people can give me ideas on how to better organize this that be great too. Hope you guys can help me out! Update in progress (thanks for the entries everyone) Series: Bakemonogatari - Bakemonogatari was shown to have opening sequences made to fit into each of the character arcs of the show. However for the TV release, Hitagi's character intro "Staple Staple" is used within the other character arcs. The opening sequences for the proper character arcs were never played until the final episode of an arc. The video release properly sets up a character's opening song to play only during their character arc. - Episodes 8 and 10 - The TV versions of these episodes were shown to be missing a number of scenes because Shaft was behind schedule in fully animating them (example: Araragi's brutal fight with the Rainy Devil). The scenes are fully animated and include some visual changes to a number of scenes for the video release. Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage - Episode 10 - Chaka's language gets censored for the Japanese TV release when he is threatening Yukio while holding her hostage before Ginji and Revy charge in to rescue her. His dirty mouth is uncensored for the video release. Earth Girl Arjuna - Episode 9 never aired on the original televised airing of the series because it dealt with a number of controversial subjects and images such as abortion and the image of a fetus in the womb of its mother as she is having sex. The episode later aired on Japanese sattelite TV and was released on video in its proper sequential spot. Escaflowne - The Japanese video release includes some additional scenes added to the first several episodes of the series that were removed from the TV version because Sunrise made too much animated material to fit the show's time slot. Bandai Entertainment has rights to the TV release. Genshiken 2 - Episode 4 - Ohno and Tanaka's erotic kiss gets censored in the televised version of the episode. The scene is uncensored in the video release. Godannar: - The intro animation changed 2 or 3 times before reaching it's final version that can be found on the DVD release. The same for season 2 I believe as well. High School of the Dead: - Suicide scene in episode 1 is uncensored. - When Saya Takagi kills a zombie in episode 2 is uncensored. Kare Kano - Episodes 14 and 15- These episodes were recapping the first half of the series yet were presented differently between the TV and Japanese video releases. The TV version was a montage of scenes featuring highlights from the first half narrated by the voice actors of the show. The Japanese video release has a narrator summarize events while the screen presents statistics on each episode of the show like air times, number of animated cels used and viewer thoughts before showing a montage of clips from said episode while music from the show's soundtrack is playing. - Episode 18- Yukino and Arima's intercourse scene is different between the TV and Japanese video release. The TV version has a black screen during the scene while the video release features stills of the scene taken from the manga. Rightstuf, the show's licensor, has rights to the show's TV release. Koi Kaze - Episode 8 never aired on the original televised airing of the series because it dealt with divorce, a controversial subject in Japanese culture. The episode was streamed online and later included in video release in its proper sequential spot. Koihime Musou - Episode 9: Hotsprings episode, so as expected, censor steam is present in the TV airing but absent on the DVD. Madlax: - Taken from on old topic, the difference for this series is that it was redrawn for the DVD release with a fuller character design and emotional tweaks for certain scenes and moments. Macross Frontier: - Extended, uncut scenes in BD releases. Confirmed for episode 1 and 2. (The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: - Probably one of the more famous differences, the TV debut had it's own order of episode releases as opposed to the actual chronological order of episodes found in the DVD release. A very unique experience for those who watched the fansubs. - Another change were corrections to the background design and school design like doors and windows. I remember seeing and old youtube video of someone comparing all the differences. Moon Phase - Episode 12 (I think): the scenes for Ryuhei's hospital room weren't finished in time for the broadcast. These were added for the DVD and the audience could then see exactly how gaudy and expensive the room must have been (there is a spoken line about this). - Episode 13: The battle with Count Kinkel was incompletely animated for TV airing, usually cutting to bizarre establishing shots during action sequences. It was completed for DVD release. - Episode 24: The climactic scene of the entire series was really unfinished when it aired on TV. It was touched up and finished for DVD release. Negima!: - Although I've never seen the DVD releases or streams, it said that the series got a major face lift from the time of its TV debut due to the poor quality and blatant errors during the TV run. Neon Genesis Evangelion - Episodes 21-24 - Later video releases of these episodes include additional scenes or scenes from the TV version that were reanimated. School Days - The infamous murder scenes in the show's final episode are shown uncensored in the Japanese video release with blood color now red, plus some additional scenes and sound effects added to the moments as they occur. (The) Skullman: - The US release could not obtain the rights to the intro theme song so a new one was made for it's release overseas. Soul Eater: - The ending sequence for the final episode is more fleshed out with a montage at the end in the DVD release as opposed to just a scrolling shot of the main cast looking off into the horizon in the TV release. (The) Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk: - uncensored moment with Kaaya getting out of the bath in episode 2 in the DVD. (The) Tower of Druaga: the Sword of Uruk: - uncensored moment in episode 7 during the bath scene. - Episode 12 is completely redrawn and updated with stronger character design and animation for the DVD release. - Possible redraw with slightly slender character designs? - Ending montage is extended with additional scenes and rearranged a bit on DVD release. I started a similar thread once before, here.
It's a great topic and deserves more attention. With Noir the artwork improved but, in the scene in question, some of the dramatic impact was lost. |

There was some noticeable improvement in the Katekyo Hitman Reborn DVD releases in comparison to the TV release. The animation and character models were redone for some scenes and more blood was added on where it was noticeably censored.

I'm not sure if this counts but the Pandora Hearts DVDs had film grain added to them in an attempt to look more artsy and it is a noticeable difference. And the Eden of the East US DVDs had to use a different opening theme for episodes 2-11 instead of the Oasis song used in the TV run.

I've seen both versions of Xebec's Negima. Pretty much the entire first half of the series was redrawn. This is far less of an exaggeration than you think.

I can pick off some obvious matters I've addressed in the past:
Escaflowne -The Japanese video release includes some additional scenes added to the first several episodes of the series that were removed from the TV version because Sunrise made too much animated material to fit the show's time slot. Bandai Entertainment has rights to the TV release. Kare Kano -Episodes 14 and 15- These episodes were recapping the first half of the series yet were presented differently between the TV and Japanese video releases. Really? They didn't air that episode because of the controversy surrounding divorce? I find that rather amusing considering the subject matter of the show. |

Well, I know that the opening played before episodes of Chrono Crusade on the DVDs and I think in later broadcast episodes is different than the opening shown in earlier episodes, although they both use the same song. This is the original opening and the later opening. The original is obviously cheaper--almost all of the scenes shown are clips taken from the actual show with some filters thrown over them to make them seem "aged", while the second opening is mostly original animation--but there's some interesting stuff in the first opening that's cut from the second. The two biggest examples, I think, are the colored, still images based on art found on the back of the manga volumes but redrawn to match the anime character designs (which are in the second opening, but desaturated and flash by too quickly to register them much), and the scene that flashes up a bunch of the character's names, which if you pause it at juuust the right time actually spoils the secret identity of one of the characters. Fun stuff! The singles and later thinpacks of Chrono Crusade include the first opening as an extra, although if you got the version of the thinpack that's stripped of extras you're out of luck.
Death Note had some reanimated scenes in the DVD release (which is also the version that aired on [adult swim]). This video has a side-by-side comparison of the broadcast version (labeled "Japanese") and DVD version (labeled "English") of some scenes from episode 20. (You might want to turn your sound down a bit for this, the person that edited the video left the sound on for both versions and it sounds a little chaotic.) |

Here are some more differences that come to mind for me:
Trigun -The opening sequence to the series is normally slightly different per episode with a clip showing the villain that Vash would be facing in that episode for the original Japanese version. However, many American video versions of the series use the same intro sequence from episode 1 for all the episodes instead. Monster -An instrumental version of the ending song "For the Love of Life" was used for the American release of the series because Viz couldn't get the rights to playing the song. Kodocha -The opening song "7 O'Clock News" was replaced with the later opening song "Ultra Relax" because Funimation couldn't claim rights to the song from the band Tokio. Because of this issue, a reference to the band used for a gag in one of Kodocha's earlier episodes winded up getting censored. Detective Conan -Due to legal concerns, the Japanese developers of the series had Funimation change the show's title name to Case Closed for the American video release and change the names of nearly all the characters to American names. |

Ghost Hunt
Episode 24 aired with the opening credits superimposed on the first scene. The DVD version restored the regular OP sequence and the first scene shows without the superimposed credits. Episode 25 DVD contains scenes not shown during the television broadcast. They were most likely cut because of time constraints rather than subject matter. [spoiler for DVD only scenes: spoiler[(1) Lin gives Naru CPR after Naru collapses. (2) In the hospital, Naru apologizes for his arrogant behavior earlier in cave.]] |

Another little correction was the addition of Mikuru's missing mole.
I did an in-depth comparison of all the episodes (something I've never had the patience or motivation to try again - note my blog layout got broken in an update or other and I never quite got it fixed so images are cut off on the right). Kiddy Grade Other than the addition of nipples in episode 12 I know of three specific changes - two spelling mistakes were fixed for the DVD and this pizza box (which I noticed by chance when doing screenshots for something else). There were also upgrades done again when making the movie versions - scenes were reordered, new ones were added and some were re-animated (those nipples again in particular). R.O.D the TV I can't remember many specifics, but at least one action scene was re-animated and they added detail to paper money that had just been white paper when broadcast. |

Code Geass (both seasons)
-All product placement for Pizza Hut is censored from the American video release of the series. Rumbling Hearts (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien) -Nipples were added to the girls during nude scenes for the video release. Tenchi Muyo GXP -Towels were animated onto the girls during hot springs scenes for the TV airing of the show. The video release reanimates the scenes to get the girls nude during said scenes. Ai Yori Aoshi -Additional shots were made for some of the show's ecchi scenes for the video release. For example, a bath scene featuring Aoi in one of the earlier episodes includes a new shot that shows her butt. Dance in the Vampire Bund -A number of nudity scenes are censored for later episodes in the show's televised airing with shots darkened during said nude scenes. The nudity is uncensored in the video release. -A number of episodes (mainly episode 7) featured incomplete animation because of Shaft being behind schedule for having the episodes ready for broadcast. These episodes are fully animated for the video release. -Episodes 7 and 9- Mina's body is in a glow effect when she goes into her transformed state for the TV broadcast. This glow is removed from the video release. |

Almost all, actually, since I believe they infamously missed one instance. But might as well add the other changes to the list then. -Many scenes were redrawn or reanimated for the video release. Episode 20 of Code Geass R2 went through some of the most evident changes. -Uncensored nudity in the video release of the first series and fog removal for both seasons. -Brief shots of violence and gore were added to the video release of R2. And a couple of additional shows that come to mind include: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (both seasons): -The DVD release includes uncensored scenes of violence and gore. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (all series) -Many scenes were redrawn or reanimated for the video release. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Episode 6: The initial broadcast had recap footage in place of scenes unfit for TV broadcast. The video release restored the original content. |

Also the vocals (thank god
They also redid a great deal of the art, although not quite to the extent evident in that Death Note video. Random Example 1 (R1 version on the right), Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5. Thankfully, they corrected some blatant coloring errors that were in the original production. They must have really been pushing a deadline on those! Most notably, they changed images to remove product identification. The Werther's candy package, though the name was fairly obscured in the original, lost its lettering altogether by the time it got here. Racke whisky was changed to a generic. Eva's Ben Nevis scotch also devolved into a generic, though Grimmer's beer at the end was not - I suppose they figured no one would recognize it from a side shot.
