You can rent it from Netflix or watch it on G4 next month then decide for yourself if you want to buy it.

If you ask me? No. I mean, from the second episode up until around episode twelve or so it shows promise, as I'm a bit of a sucker for Mafia stories personally, but once they get to their stupid Necro-Rise crap and throw in a bunch of utterly ridiculous superpowers (essentially tossing any character development achieved thus far right out the window), it just gets way too stupid to be tolerable. The ending was also a massive disappointment (seeing as how it pretty much negated the entire revenge plot up until that point).

I have purchased volumes 1-5 of this show (That is the first 20 episodes) and I think the show is fantastic. It was written by Yashurio Nightow, who also created Trigun.
There are not many Animes about the mafia and this is a really good one. You will really get attached to all the characters in the show, and towards the ending the show gets really emotional. This is one of my favorite animes that I am watching at the moment.
As for lots of action and violence, there is plenty of that too.

It is a very good Show. The charcters Are so well developed and later on when Every one turns Into Badasses It just Keeps Getting better and better. My advice Rent it first, if you like it wait for the box set it will be alot cheaper.
good Luck

I'm not sure if Yashurio Nightow actually wrote the story. He just created the character the game, in which was turn into an anime.
The anime is bad ass (that's if you enjoy the PS2 games), even if you don't like the later part, the first few half is better than most entire series being release right now and worth watching.

For me I thought it was a great anime, it had a good story line and realy good animation. But for me it was the character development that realy made it good. Just for that I would get it.

I've been collecting the show on DVD, and it's very good so far. Volume 5 is on it's way to me as I type, in fact.

I have watched the whole series and think it's one of the best anime series out there. I definitely would suggest picking it up. It has an awesome story and Brandon Heat is one of my favorite characters in anime.

I too would deffinately recommend Gungrave. I love the series. The action and fighting is great. The story I think is great. And the animation is freaking awsome. Just go get it and see for yourself. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have so far.

Have been watching up til DVD vol.4, vol.5 on it way in the mail. From what I've seen so far, its becoming my recent favorite show in the past year or two, on top of Last Exile. It got really good character development & story, as interesting events & character growth one follows the other. No filler episodes or side stories, but focusing on the main characters all the way. Designs are very cool, and the mafia story part is awesome. The only weak spot so far is the lack of very intense action supported by fantasic smooth animation. It definitely have some moments, but the quality of action money shots are fewer and lower quality when compare to stuff like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. But the drama in this show makes it up in spade.
Episode 2 - 15 is a very long flashback that tells the back story between Brandon & Harry. So expect to be thrown off a bit when you first watch episode 1 & 2.
Really like this show so far.

the first episode was very addictive... i mean it will or at least it did get me curious and all... but from episode two till the end of the flashback story which is about the next 15 episodes... the pace got a little slower... I'm not saying it's not good... on the contrary i really like the serie... but i would suggest you to rent it first and buy it after
