The only reason to do an American dub is to get star voice actors, and even then, does it really increase the film's potential for success? Past Ghibli films have sported a few big names as well as the "kids will know who they are" Disney actors, but it sure didn't seem to do all that much for these films overall in the box office.

The answer for that must boil down to marketing than anything else.

Anyway, I expect this dub to be fine. I never heard the UK dub, but I've never been disappointed by any Ghibli dubs, and frankly, I don't think it's fair to write off a dub you haven't even heard, much less beforehand, whether it has a pre-existing dub or not.

I really thought the Ponyo dub could have been a lot better. And a lot of the lines they just completely changed its meaning.

Well, I do want to see the UK version one day because the Borrowers will always be British in my mind, BUT I'm still really excited to see this movie and am counting down the days until the 17th! Personally I think I'll still enjoy the film with the US dub just as much as any other version.

How much better is the UK dub?

From this what I can say is that Shu in the UK dub wasn't as good an voice actor I personally don't think, sounded a bit bland and unemotional in scenes, but the voice they've picked here sound too old - he's supposed to be about nine. Arrietty lines, some of them are good actually but she's way to shouty in the "My mother and father and I are all Borrowers..." up to the the "It's possible.." line (which is fine).

My only issue with the Ponyo dub was the pop music ditty over the closing credits. Otherwise the dub was fine to me; I wouldn't say it's my favorite of the Ghibli dubs, but I didn't notice anything glaringly wrong with it (even though Cyrus did overact quite a bit in the beginning).

I'll judge for myself when I see the dub; the trailer I saw in the theaters sounded fine to me, even if the music was noticeably different from the original. I doubt they're going to replace Cecile Corbell's score, though, because the only Ghibli movies they altered the music to were Kiki and Laputa, and even then I didn't find either so offensive; both were essentially the same scores, if rearranged and/or punched up in some cases.

Ponyo was an OK dub. I'd put it middle of the road for Disney dubs. I still often watch it in dubbed form, though.

The showing at a dallas studio ghibli film festival (I believe ANN talked about it) was the first in the country to screen this the us dub and I was able to see it last weekend. The dub is pretty good, but for me carol burnnet stole the show! She was fabulous so in her I do not believe you will be disappointed Smile
