Stealing it offline? Wouldn't that mean flying to Japan, walking into a store, and shoplifting the discs?

Excepting extras though, OniAi has been their only sub-only release.
Quote: | Considering that the Senran Kagura games are released with only Japanese audio, FUNimation's decision to even dub the show in the first place still baffles me. |
Why should decisions made with the source material adaptations by other companies dictate Funi's choices? Nobody batted an eye when they dubbed Shuffle!, despite Mangagamer not dubbing the game. By your logic, the Kimi ga nozomu eien game was never released over here, so why did Funimation even license/translate it in the first place?

Wasn't that one of those OVAs that only came out on DVD in Japan? Funi can't release HD versions that don't exist if the JP companies don't let Funi create their own.
Quote: | Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy, Paniponi Dash & Welcome to the NHK all I know have yellow subtitles under Funimation releases. Okay, I should've specified "for shows originally released by Funimation." I believe some of their license rescues do convert the subs to Funi style, though text-heavy shows like PPD increase the temptation to stick with existing subs.
LinkSword wrote: | All this crying for 18 minutes of underage characters in pseudo-pornographic fashions... Jesus. |
Sorry, I didn't know we were only allowed to be concerned about packaging misrepresentations/errors for LinkSword-approved mature, SRSDeep anime.
CatSword wrote: | There's no reason for me to buy their release when I could just rip the show from an illegal streaming site and burn it to my own DVD. |
Somehow I doubt that illegal streaming sites bother to replace the TV broadcast versions with the uncensored disc releases, amidst all the seasonal churn and the drive to put out the latest currently-airing anime.
ArmyOfDarkness wrote: | I applaud Funi that they stopped using Yellow subs, but as you can see in my quote I mentioned Sentai, who to this day, still use yellow subs. I don't follow your final statement though, care to elaborate? |
I assumed from your listing of the companies that you were implying that they all did those things. As for the final statement, people don't seem to complain nearly as much or as loudly when fansubs use/d the color yellow, leading me to believe that the "yellow is ugly" meme is just an excuse to hate on official subs.
I see people complaining about rips of Funi streams/discs complaining about ugly subs as well, even though Funi uses white with black outlines and nobody complains when fansubs do the same. As for industry reforms and such, I'd settle for "no TV broadcast versions on disc" and "packaging text accurately reflects disc content." It's not like the missing omake phenomenon hasn't hit other R1 releases where the JP side wouldn't part with the rights, just that it was coupled with a mixup and packaging error this time.

Um, what? Which releases has Funimation "heavily censored" themselves, as opposed to the Japanese shafting them by giving them the TV broadcast version? Sounds like someone's still living in the 90s DBZ days.

Once again, here is someone who has no idea what they're talking about. Funi's simulcasts are censored, as are all tv braodacast versions and simulcasts.
Their releases are uncensored unless there was a mistake like Sankarea.

What can make this even worse is if this is brought up on a Funi panel at a convention or in an interview, the reps might say something like they can't really talk about or they might briefly address the issue.

Truly the exclusion of some OVA's of a crappy adaption of a crappy fanservice beat-em-up is a cause for great concern.
Christ. The show and game are both braindead pablum anyway.

It needs to be brought up and pursued. False advertising is unacceptable and should never be tolerated regardless of what kind of business or industry is involved.

Funimation (yes, your precious "can never do any harm" Funimation) screwed up, period. Stop trying to defend them and accept it. |
Only one day after your previous account got placed on moderation and you're already back on the forums, eh?
You sure don't waste any time, do you Shiratori?

Hopefully they release these OVA's on a separate BD/DVD but that's probably wishful thinking.

If that line of thought had any logic attached then this one would also be true:
1) I think pokemon is a crap
2) If the next blu-ray pokemon movie release was an upscale from the DVD version, then it would not be a cause of great concern (see 1)
YOU ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE.

I was highly considering importing this even if I don't think highly on the fanservice focus but even if I was not planning on it. The idea of only making missing content clear a day before the release, especially content they marketed the work with and have printed on the box is incredibly egregious.
What you or I think of the show or games isn't important.
FUNimation made another move which will lead to people putting off preorders at best, refunds on occasion and perhaps people relying on other means to get their goods (from online means to importing) as well as buying from other sellers. I practice the same idea with Viz Media, I support their Signature releases among others but will avoid any of their Detective Conan stuff and focus on other releases from Yen Press or Dark Horse even more so whenever I hear a peep of a mistake.
In case anyone cares, Senran Kagura's games are pretty decent at the very worst and surprisingly the best brawlers on the 3DS even including the Japanese library as far as I can see (Senran Kagura 2 is preordered and due for an August 7th release - I hope they don't drop me a blog notice that they won't have something they marketed in one of their livestreams). The Vita's Shinovi Versus is pretty good I hear as well and the point when Tamsoft really stepped up their quality with the series.
Good manga or anime? Senran Kagura Spark is a competent prequel to the first game which sticks to the oldest members of the cast as first years showing some amusing interactions and tensions which can be felt in small amounts years onwards in Senran Kagura Burst. Otherwise, nothing really sticks out beyond marketing for a game like most video game adaptations.
EDITS: Focusing on a typo on the bolded line... >_> Hopefully no one saw it.

that's not what I am saying at all
what I am saying is, if they sell it in your country you are obligated to buy it.
if they do not sell it in your country, then you are not.
*rant_____
do not blame piracy because a japanese firm wants to screw themselves over. They can blame themselves.
just like in america, the drop in cable television subscribers is not just due to piracy.
it has more to do with the american cable industry is run by greed and asses. Comcast is the #1 hated company in america, and it is not due to 'piracy'.
this is my opinion: the two biggest threats facing the anime industry are too much competition and bad management.
In a free market, people will buy the best item at the best price right?
however this does not always apply to anime or entertainment.
You see, an Otaku will buy A and if he has money left over he will still buy B.
And if Aniplex is too expensive, he may instead buy B C D E.
it is not 'this' or 'that', it is a 'this' AND 'what else?' market.

Damn... I was actually really looking forward to those specials. This is why I don't pre-order Funimation titles.

Man, I was holding out so I could get this and Devil is a Part Timer at the same time.
Guess I'll just go ahead and get Devil is a Part Timer and wait a bit to see if Funi re-releases Senran Kagura.

Out of curiosity, why on earth do so many people think that "I don't like this show" is a defense for fraud? Personally the show isn't that important to me; I just don't like the fact that I'm now a victim of fraud and probably wouldn't've bought the damn thing if Funi weren't busy committing fraud. You could use this line in talking about Funimation correcting their solicitation well beforehand and giving people more than enough time to cancel their preorders if need be, but this just indefensible fraud. Frankly, I don't see how this isn't class action material.

That annoys me as I didn't know and had waited for the (possible) BD release.
Thanks for the the info at least. I would have been even more upset if I found out while watching it (or at least trying to).

That's what I thought at first too from what I could remember, but I've found bluray versions of it, so unless it was just an upscale (which it didn't look like it was) or the SD version w/ the bluray release in Japan, then it was likely held back by the licensors.
Funi could have at least put SD version on the bd disc (presuming it didn't look worse of course) just to keep everything together.
