I'm surprised there wasn't one for 14 and 15, the Japan Animator Expo had 35 shorts, and not a single one got nominated?

Looking through the entries, it seems to only contain either cutting edge CG or really artsy 2D animation, is that why none made it.

I guess they really just hate animation/artstyle from Japan. Even those that won before like Petit Cubes have peculiar design and in comparison, resembled more of a western styled drawing. Any way, why not insert Furiko into this event, or it is too late now since that short was made in 2013? Or it has been there before but were defeated? Speaking of Japan Animator Expo, yeah, there's a whole lot of noteworthy stuff just waiting for a pick or two.

Pretty sad considering JP likes animation more than most other countries.

I don't know for sure, but Cartoon Brew did a run down of the 70 submissions that initially qualified & no Japanese entries were mentioned - implying there weren't any to be shunned. It doesn't matter if there were some great anime shorts out there; if nobody submitted them to the Academy for consideration, they won't get considered.

To even be eligible the short would have had to either run a week in an LA movie theater, including being shown in the theater listings with dates and times, or win a qualifying award at an Academy approved festival. Then someone actually has to take the time to submit it to the AMPAS. To the best of my knowledge, there were no shorts eligible yet alone submitted.

Well, the one for Finding Dory was actually very VERY good.

But then again, poor Shelter.

No anime was considered? Imagine that. *immense sarcasm intended*

No really, this is no surprise to anyone. They don't ever want anything Japanese to even come close to winning. They're paranoid of the "annie-maze" or something.

No Ghibli this year so No Oscar nomination.

Oscar people only care about anime if anime look like something made by Disney and Ghibli is know to have close relationships with Disney.

Pro-tip: Anime only qualifies for consideration if the responsible party in possession of it submits it and registers it. You know what other anime didn't get submitted? The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Redline, and the first Madoka movie.
