I assume he went to school in Tokyo, capital cities usually have the most foreigners. A real translation would be better, some of what he says is a bit unclear.

Will someone licensed Eizouken in English in the few years? I'm hope that VIZ, Yen Press or others will got Eizouken and translated in English.

I figured this was the case but it's nice to see clarification. My brother moved over to Malaysia several years back to work at an international school for the families of office/business employees in Kuala Lumpur, and it's been fascinating seeing how much overlap there has been, not just in terms of the ethnic makeup of the pupils, but also regarding access to resources and focus on pursuing intellectual interests and expanding horizons.
As someone who grew up in fairly impoverished and predominantly white northern English school, I've always been struck by how positive, colourblind, open and naturally curious the kids over there are. Granted, due to the makeup of the patrons there's perhaps more wealth going into that school than the average, but to be it's always highlighted what promoting and supporting passions can do for personal growth in comparison to the rote memorization exercises I was stuck with. Given the hype that the anime has gotten, it is surprising the manga getting a license announcement has not happened yet (AFAIK). |

Tokyo-to isn't actually that much out of line from the other non-backwater prefectures; all the prefectures around nagoya have foreign-born populations of like 2.5%. And a per-prefecture figure involves a lot of averaging; some areas will be significantly higher, and with those numbers the foreign-ancestry schoolkids would be something like twice the percentage of foregn-born residents. There's a lot more diversity in japan than people realise. Which was the point of the tweet, and now people have to explain it to you. |
