I love this series I can't wait, if and when they release it here. If they don't I'll buy the R2's when there released. |

I watched the first episode of Tsukihime and it put me to sleep. Everyone keeps telling me how great it is, but man, is it ever slow. If I keep going, the show gets much better, right? Does the pacing ever pick up?

I'd hesitate to call it an action show, but it does pick up a bit with the introduction of spoiler[Shiki... the other Shiki]. Most of the story is carried by character exposition, though...

The pacing of the first episode is indicative of the pacing of the rest of the series - sure there are a few moments that have some action and a couple of interesting moments, but overall, it is a bit slow (and I happen to like things like Kokoro Library and Yokohama Shopping Log).
On a slightly OT note, I noticed that the Japanese poster wrote TUKIHIME instead of TSUKIHIME - I only recently noticed that this is actually the normal way things are romanized, but my habit is to use TSU instead of TU, so I'll stick with that. |

Yes, I'd say the show does get better. It is a little slow in pace, but this qualifies more as a mystery/thriller show than an action one. I'd say once you are 4-5 episodes into it, you will be enjoying yourself.

spoiler[the real evil twin was, and always has been, Shiki!]
but anyway, I thought Tsukihime seemed a bit interesting at the beginning, but as it went on, I just wanted it to end. All the characters, based on both designs and actions, seemed like they were taken right out of a Japanese dating sim game. All the females in the series are cute girls, with very different personalities, that all want to sex up our "your face here" main character. On top of that, there are probably enough abandoned plot threads in the series to set up, God-forbid, a second season. Some of the action scenes were fun, but nothing really special. If you want something dark and violent on fansub, I'd recommend 100 Stories over Tsukihime. |

To go more off-topic... It's not actually the "normal" way things are romanized, since there is no "normal" way to romanize things. Hepburn-style Romanization vs Shin-Kunrei-Shiki... Specifically, Hepburn romanizes 'tsu' as Shin-Kunrei romanizes it "tu". Shin-Kunrei is more internally-consistant ("ta ti tu te to") compared to Hepburn ("ta chi tsu te to"), but Hepburn is closer to how things are actually pronounced in English. If you wanted to make the Spatula Method of Romanization, you could spell "Tsukihime" as "Riladon13B" if you wanted. Provided there's some means of knowing what's being said (in a consistant fashion) you could make a new (and no less correct!) way of romanizing Japanese. :) |

woosh!...... huh? wha?
My take on this show. I would say that this series is more of a mystery than action. Shiki trying to remember his past and the events that lead up to it is probably the only thing that will interest you. However the concepts of the 'Direct Death" and Shiki's eyesight were actually intriqueing to me. So along this road of remembering you throw in the mystery of Arcreid and her past and Ciel's past, the Tohno family's past(Akiha), and speculation as to what "really happened" to Satsuki along the way and you have more of a .hack/sign feeling than say a hellsing one. Add in titilatingly well placed action scenes just enough to break up the slowness and that's what you get. There is a lot of story that they just couldn't put in the animation that was in the games. I've heard that type-moon was going to make expansions on Satsuki and Akiha. This fate/staynight game looks like it may have Shiki in it. It does show a character with a blood stain on his chest. (if you don't know thats a key element of shiki's past) So Zac to answer your question, give it a few more eps, if you still don't like it, then you just wasted an hour or so of time. That's not that big a'loss is it? |
