My biggest issue with Ep 9 was the long backstory of Sagami. Didn't we already know all of this? Maybe the implication that he was killing off his rivals was new info, but recapping the rest of it didn't make it sound any more sensible the second time. The idea of having more kaiju-fighting robots and pilots was rational, but that wasn't his motivation, so even that is made to look sinister.

Considering how obsessed the review is with the bad animation, I'm surprised it didn't mention that the centaur kaiju cut halfway through chicken kaiju's wing with a downward slice of his sword, and next the injury is depicted as a hole laser-burned through the center of LoM's wing.

Not quite sold on the feasibility of Yukio's repairs, but eh.

This seems to be the season of poultry. Smile Here we have Land of Men, which is a less feathered clone of the resting form of the phoenix god from Kusunoki's Garden, which is a sometimes fiery version of Piyoko from Rooster Fighter.

The hole in the wing came earlier. You see one of the deer kaiju's shots hit Land of Men - and Ao takes an injury on her arm - but you can't see the hole because of all the fire. But when Land of Men does the sun attack to kill the bat kaiju, you can see the hole in the wing.

Ok fair enough. I'm well aware I'm not paying close attention (almost decided to drop it again before even watching this last ep), but c'mon, me, how did I remember chicken kaiju as even having actual feathers?? I guess I'm conflating it with all the other poultry this season. Yeah, let's go with that... Embarassed

I don't think anything in that episode 9 flashback was meant to make Sagami at all sympathetic. Frankly, I'm not sure it served any meaningful function. We know he was jealous of Tetsuo, and we know that he is willing to kill anyone who doesn't side with his vision. I don't think a flashback where we come out of it knowing he was killing people over this before the freeze is much of a reveal.

Honestly my money's on setting up a reveal next episode that he also sabotaged the ship that went out to fight the Kaiju - remember when their main laser cannon shorted out episode 1 and they all died horribly? Bet that was him.

Yeah that episode was sick as hell, no notes, wish I didn’t vote for this series to get reviews a little more every week

Huh? It wasn't a space station and it didn't crash on Earth. Unless I'm the one again forgetting what I'm seeing week to week, it was a space battleship to deliver Tetsuo to the outer edge of the galaxy where kaiju were amassing, and it blew to smithereens nowhere near Earth.

I'm suspecting the "random woman" is a kaiju in human form, unless she's just a suicidal lunatic. I'm sure we'll be seeing her again.

It's also pretty hard to redeem a character like Sagami when it's revealed that he (along with some random woman) caused Tetsuo's space station to crashland on Earth,

…oh you’re paying absolutely negative levels of attention huh?

Yeah honestly when we started getting into the tragic backstory my wife and I, who were already wavering on this one, just turned it off and went to watch something else. Glancing through the review, it sounds like I would have hated it even more if I stuck with the episode so I think we made the right choice there.

Also gonna be slightly self-satisfied that I called he was behind the inciting incident with the ship failure that led to all those ERDE people dying horribly in space, which does appear to be the case if I'm reading the review right and I did call like 3 episodes ago.

I wouldn't base anything about this show on these reviews since I don't think the reviewer is actually watching it. At best it might be playing in the background while he's doing something else. As a couple people have pointed out now, what space station? (he also called it a space station in the first review too. And Yukio was a shuttle Rolling Eyes ).

I found it kind of funny that he answered the "why do another Sagami flashback now?" question he spent 2/3 of the review ranting about in the last paragraph. It wasn't to redeem him or make the viewer sympathetic. It couldn't have happened sooner either. It had to happen now because Tetsuo had to hear it to have his big character moment.

And the review missed the whole point of Tetsuo giving the Savior title to Sagami. Again, it wasn't to redeem him, or make him a "good guy". It was to show Sagami that the title doesn't matter. Having a title doesn't change Tetsuo in any way; he is still the Savior by being the Savior. And likewise even if he has the title of Savior, Sagami is still not the Savior.

I thought of your post during the episode. You called it.

I don't think Testsuo was trying to redeem Sagami by telling him to take his title of Savior. Considering what Tetsuo said about his own life, I think Tetsuo was saying that it was meaningless. It's what we do that is important. Sagami did what he did to get noticed, while Testuo was crushed under expectations, but kept going because he knew people counted on him. All of what Sagami did was pointless because the kid he hated so much for getting in his way would have willingly handed over the spotlight.
