Recently, I have been really getting into the whole manga trend, and now feel like buying a couple mangas sometime soon. So my question is, can you recommend me a great manga series? If this narrows it down a bit, some of the mangas/anime series I am into are The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star (as you can see, I am kinda into the funny/random/serio-comedy ones, but don't let that stop you from trying something else)
Also, I am kinda poor at the moment, so if you know something that is cheap as well, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks. (10 dollars)
Please do NOT tell me to go to onemanga.com (I am the kind of person that wishes to have the physical version so I can read it anywhere)
One last thing! The closest book store to me is a Boarders, I would prefer you give me something they may carry, thanks

First is the general suggestion to any manga fan which is 20th Century Boys and Pluto, they are some amazing works that everyone should try.
In terms of things that might be more suited to your tastes you might want to give the Lucky Star manga a shot if you saw the anime (although I heard the manga isn't as good). My favorite comedy manga would be Genshiken and Welcome to the NHK. They are some great comedies that I wouldn't pass up the chance to read again and again (in fact I'm rereading Genshiken right now).

20th Century Boys is excellent, but since one volume is out you might want to wait a bit to jump onto the bandwagon. Monster, which has already been completely published and is by the same author, is probably a safer bet. It also has a much stronger beginning, although the former swiftly proves to be superior to the latter.
If you are at all interested in shonen comics you should probably take a look at Fullmetal Alchemist. If you aren't, you should probably check out Yotsuba&! which gives feelings of happiness and joy about as intense as getting kicked very hard in the privates gives feelings of abject pain and loathing.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in its entirety is a little pricey, but since it is one of the best manga series ever written you should probably take a look at it, whether or not you saw the movie (which covers only about a fifth of the comic). It's sort of the manga equivalent of The Lord of the Rings, except a lot less pretentious and at times actually profound.

Very very strongly agree with Monster, 20th Century Boys and Pluto, all of them (written by Naoki Urasawa) are among my favorite manga. Urasawa is a genius.
Death Note is a great starting point, a suspenseful and interesting series and you don't have to be a fan of manga to like it. But even if you are, I don't suggest that you miss out on it. The last few arcs start to lack the excitement of the first ones but overall its still a really good manga.
Berserk is my favorite manga (tied with Monster). The art is breathtaking, the story is amazing, and even if it strays a little later on, you won't mind at all because you're constantly being entertained. The only downside (for some people) is that there's excessive gore and nudity, so if you get creeped out by stuff like that I don't suggest picking it up, but otherwise it's a must read.
Life is a very suspenseful manga that deals some real-life issues like self-harm and bullying that's also definitely worth reading. But before you pick up the tokyopop version, a warning: don't expect to finish it. Tokyopop cut the series at volume 9 along with a bunch of other mangas, and there's no official news on resuming it, and scans are hard if not impossible to find. I'd say the 9 volumes is worth it but if you don't like leaving a series unfinished then think it through.
Parasyte, Claymore, Real, and Vagabond are also really nice mangas, but it'd take me ages to write about them all so check those out too if you're interested.

Definitely Monster. Borders carries it, and it's exactly $10 per volume. Well, $9.99, but you get the point. Anyway, I cannot praise this manga enough - it has a fantastic plot and very well-rounded characters, and it's definitely worth your while.

If you haven't seen the anime yet, or like the anime a lot, you could try Azumanga Daioh or Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei. Azumanga Daioh is available as a cheap omnibus and the first volume of Zetsubou-sensei came out a few weeks ago.

Oh, thank god. Someone beat me too the punch (fills me with hope). Yes, a million times, yes. Especially Pluto. Pluto is amazing

Based on the stated mangas you liked I have to strongly second Tamarai's suggestions on Azumanga and Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei. Also as Tamarai said Azumanga will cost more but it comes as a large omnibus. So you get 4 vols for the price of one. Some other seconds would be Yotsuba&! and Genshiken.
Some other titles that come to mind are S.S. Astro, Kujibuki Unbalanced (warning this one is really out there - also it is connected to a degree with Genshiken), and Dojin Work. Also you should check out Megatokyo. It is a webcomic (Megatokyo.com)that is still being published every MWF (well when Fred gets around to it) and is available in published paperback copies. Absolutely funny.

For the people recommending Monster: yes it's an excellent manga, but did you look at the other titles the original poster mentioned liking? Those were comedies, often quite silly. Monster is a dark and sinister drama.
I'd say the suggestions of Azumanga Daioh, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, and Yotsuba& (pronounced Yotsubato) are more what undeadhead was asking for. Also, Cromartie High School is also a good screwball comedy, with little plot to distract from the jokes. School Ruble could be another alternative if you want a huge set of interlocking love-triangles holding the comedy together in addition to the absurd activities of the main characters.

Oh, how about Excel Saga? It has longer story arcs than the other comedy series that were mentioned, but it had no trouble making me laugh. On the other hand, the anime is easier to find and digest...
Eyeshield 21 is a good series if you like shounen manga with tons of humor or just want something funny with an actual plot. I couldn't care less about American football, but I'm a loyal Eyeshield 21 reader. It is along series though, 25+ volumes so far...
Yakitate!! Japan also has typical shounen battles, bread baking battles to be exact, and it's completely over the top and silly.

Actually there's 4 volumes out now. Well I guess not everywhere. I guess I should correct that by saying that in the U.S. market there are currently 4.

Not by my account. All the book stores and comic shops only have the first volume out. Its solicited through volume 4 at the point I think. So they're coming, but only one every other month I think.

Oh, my bad. I got confused with Pluto. I'm really out of it today. And even for Pluto they only have 2 volumes. Not sure what i was thinking. I still suggest both of them though.

Do what I do, read 20th Century and Pluto as they come and fill the time between with Monster.
