This is getting sad.

No it has not.

Naruto infamously had eighty or so episodes of filler in a row. Bleach has only had thirty episodes of filler as of this post, with another thirteen or so to go due to the newest filler arc.

No-one is happy about so much filler, but then everyone who is still watching Bleach has no doubt learnt to not be too disappointed about such happenings.

Naruto had more than three separate consecutive filler arcs?

IIRC the Bounto arc was almost 50 episodes.

It's getting so bad that they're making fourth-wall jokes about their "situation" and asking us to wait just a little longer...

Even Bleach hasn't had three "consecutive" filler arcs. Thank goodness.

Consecutive. You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

I'd be more sympathetic to this sort of whining if Bleach's most recent filler arc hadn't been better than Bleach's most recent canon arc in almost every respect. It was as if the production team got together and said "hey, we can actually design a plot with a modicum of PACING, when we aren't hobbled by Kubo's narrative constipation!" They may have stumbled a bit at the finish line, but so far they've done a much better job than they'd been doing before.

"And your favorite show still sucks."

Yeah, Bleach has nothing on Naruto when it comes to filler. In the first place, just Naruto's sheer quantity of filler--84 straight episodes, between 136 and 220. Then with Shippuden it seems there has been filler arcs on a rather regular basis--though I dropped the show like a hot potato once the second filler arc started. With Bleach there are regular filler arcs, however, they do a much better job of pacing them than Naruto did. Though they, too, are the main reason I dropped Bleach (around the same time I dropped Naruto).

A pity, really... I get a kick out of mindless shonen like this.

Part of what made the Naruto filler so brutal was that they didn't do extended arcs... no no, instead the filler was either stand alone episodes or short two-to-five episode arcs. If I remember right it was four years of this... this... mindlessness. On a semi-related note, this webpage has a pretty fabulous Naruto Filler Plot Generator--does a good job of showing how excruciating that filler was.

I actually enjoyed the most recent filler arc to some degree. Although I thought that the filler would end when spoiler[Muramasa finally bit the dust], I can't believe it's actually still going on.

In fact, what it feels like is a filler arc for a filler arc. And that's what irritates me the most.

Yeah you can be sad about the fillers but of the more recent shonen series, Bleach's fillers have had the better pacing, animation quality, and story over other series.

Naruto was torture. The started out okay with 2 character develop arcs about Sakura and Hinata but became pure garbage with the "Let's have Naruto randomly go somewhere with random Genin and make him as dumb as he was before the chunin exam while we're at it" stories they ran afterwards.

One Piece had decent fillers in the beginning but that's because they animated the side stories that Oda did for covers. When they went on their own they had some boring stories. Not to mention those couple of episodes of PURE recaps of character origins. Yeah only a few episodes but that was a couple of monthes of nothing IRL.

Bleach, although a little slow and clunky with the bount stuff at first, has at least had creative stories and later ones were okay for the most part. Well, most of them at least. The recent sword was one wasn't that bad. And the story about the shinigami stuck in Hueco Mondo was actually from Kubo.

I think I do know what it means.

And Bleach just entered it's third filler arc, from what the episode previews have told me. Unless the "120 years ago" arc wasn't filler, but it could have fooled me...since it was such a random tangent in the middle of a current arc with no segway whatsoever.

I forgot all about that part; but I didn't think it was filler. But IIRC it was "past of soul society" "zanpakuto arc" (which I thought was awful simply because of what it did to the concept of the zanpakuto) and now whatever filler arc just started.

Bleach may or may not be entering its third filler arc (more on that in just a bit), but it hasn't had three consecutive filler arcs.

I think the number of arcs that Bleach has had depends on what we mean by "arc". The Bount arc was definitely an arc, but was it actually two arcs since it took up two seasons? And looking at the other end of the scale, what about that little four or five episode bit around episode 128(?) about the Hollow who could absorb spirits and multiply? Is that an arc, and if not, what is it? Heck, what about Karakura Riser, which only lasted two episodes?

This is the way I see it; others may have different opinions.

The Bount arc was the first filler arc, the second was that never-to-be-spoken-about-again Captain Shusuke Amagai arc, the third was not the past arc but the the Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc plus the latest filler arc combined.

Are you referring to the "Swing Back the Pendulum" arc where they showed where exactly the Vaizard came from? If so then, no, it's not filler in any sense of the word as it's both critical plot information and was taken directly from the manga. A flashback isn't inherently filler, even if it does take up a dozen episodes.

Hehe. I love when people when people mistake canon for "filler". That word is throw around so much it gives me a headache. I've always wondered if Japanese fans b*tch as much as the rest of the world...

It was interesting plot information, not critical information. At the point that arc aired, the vizard hadn't even made an appearance for something like 40 episodes.

Although I suppose it might be relevant if they actually had some screen time again?

Also, just because it's canon doesn't mean it isn't filler :p

Going on a wild tangent for 20 episodes worth of story without any warning, rhythm, or reason is FILLER. There is a time and a place to delve into backstory, and it isn't in the middle of the current arc. It should be done right before or after it becomes relevant.

I was under the impression that "filler episodes" were the ones that deviated from the story in the manga... To tell you the truth I had never heard this term "filler" until I started frequenting forums years back. I always thought they were extra episodes we anime watchers were privledged to check out. Sad to see theres such a bad connotation associated with that word.
