With Bang Zoom saying they will no longer make English Dub's due to the state of fan sub's killing the anime market. Wow it's not the worlds markets are down right now. It people who watch shows subtitled and who do not buy the dvd's that are killing anime. Thats a bold face statement.
The numbers are down on dvd sales. The question is will you miss those English Dub's at all? I would miss them only is The second season the one dose not make it state side. What are the thoughts on this? |

I'm not going to lock this thread (yet), but do we really need another thread just to reiterate the comments being made in the very lengthy Bang Zoom-related thread in the Talkback forum?

Hold on a second, because this one actually has merit to separate itself from the other topic if all talks of fan sub sites is removed. Maybe a rewording of the opening to state should dubbed anime cease, will you stop watching anime? With this rewording, I'll go on record to say hell no. Though I prefer dub, I can tolerate subtitles. In fact, I own several series without a dub and it's going to get larger thanks to cost savings by distributors. And frankly, I've been happy so far. After all, I would have completely missed out on Aria and Ramen Fighter Miki* if I retained this "dub only" attitude. I would have lost out completely otherwise. *This series has got to be one of the best blind buys I've ever made. The only complaint I've against subtitles is grammar and spelling mistakes, though certainly not enough to dismiss a purchase unless fans who bought it state it's so disastrous, it's not worth a purchase. For example, (I can't recall the series), but the word "vial" was replaced with "vile". That's just gross negligence on the distributor and completely unacceptable enough to skip a purchase outright. |

Hmm. I certainly wouldn't stop watching it but I'd probably stop paying for it for the most part. I'm happy to pay for DVDs if they add something of value. If it's so bad that a dub isn't even justified though then I say whatever. If the R1 market for a show or for all shows is that small then does it even matter? Might as well just sell anime in Japan to their primary market. Let R1 fans leech of of fansubs. It hardly matters. |

Honestly, if English dubs went the way of the dodo then I'd stop watching anime all together. I'd just try to acquire the hundreds of anime that I don't have and just focus on that. I know it may seem silly to all of you, but I really love dubs. I tried to get into watching anime subbed, I really did, but I could never get into it and it's probably because I often feel disconnected with the show I am watching when I watch anime subbed.

Second this. And there may be a bigger picture here. I was asking an Apple fanboy about why Blu-Ray support is so lacking in Mac OS and his take was that Apple's vision of the future did not involve portable media such as CDs, DVDs, or their descendants. Eventually everything will be online and accessed via internet. If that is the case, the business model for dubbed anime will have to be reworked from what it is now. That is from media sales to online rights sales. It should be possible if there is enough market demand, and I suspect there is. |

Not that any other anime company has stated this. I was asking for reactions to that statement as well as how people feel about what was said. Calling this thread pointless? Please tell me what YOU would have called this Thread? |

Yes I would miss the dubs, especially since Bang Zoom does a great job of doing them.
IMO if it was not for English Dubs (even though they are "hated" now) there would be NO anime in the USA, thus this site would not be here, etc.... If it was not for dubs, I would not be an anime fan, or even a Godzilla fan.... |

I'd definitely miss dubs if they suddenly disappeared. I don't think they will, though. But I've already adjusted my expectations. First, I realize that not every show I like is going to get ANY R1 release, so I've adjusted to that reality. Second, I realize that not every R1 release I want will necessarily have a dub. So basically I'm happy as a pig in poop when it does happen, but I can live with sub-only when I have to.

Is your catstigereye closed because no one said this. Key merely pointed out the Bang Zoom discussion was already going full swing in Talkback and this thread was close to repeating it. I simply recommended a slight change in the wording to make its purpose about missing English dubs, not the state of the anime industry and reasons why it's like it is. Nothing more. Nothing less.

B-I-N-G-O! Those are my exact feelings. I've already adapted to just collecting older shows since more and more sub-only releases come out and there are still literally hundreds of shows with dubs that I can buy. I used to watch subs when I was a fansub watcher, but now that I strictly buy shows, dubs just became my norm and I've struggled to go back ever since. Like Hannish Lightning said, I just feel disconnected from the show when I read subs. As a matter fact, on those rare times when I switch the language just to hear it, the Japanese language can get on my nerves a little bit. It didn't used to, but now that I'm a pure dub fan, it does. I know that's going to piss off some purists, but I don't mean in it in a mean way like I think they're bad, I just get annoyed (kind of like how the level-headed sub fans can't listen to English dubs). All that said, I do own three sub-only releases, but they all have their quirks. The first I bought was Futari H when I first started getting into buying, but still watched fansubs and hadn't completed converted by that point. The second was Punie-chan, but I grabbed that because I heard good things and it was $8. I watched it once, but I probably won't watch it again unless MB goes and gives it the Dokuro-chan treatment. The third is Aria because I heard so much praise for it. 6 months later and I still haven't watched it beyond the first episode and I'll probably sell it before I do (don't kill me PJ). Now, at this point, I am a purebred dub fan and I think a show that consists of nothing but talking should be in a language I speak in. Now, the common factor between the two I did watch and the one I didn't is that the two I finished are extremely short (Futari H 4, 30-minute eps; Punie-chan 8, 15-minute eps) and the one I didn't is 13 complete episodes. If Aria was 3-4 episodes, I would probably watch it. |

I wouldn't kill you over this. Even I admit this series isn't for everyone and with its slow pace and reading, this could knock out many viewers. I will say, though, there's less frequency of "double speak" (two characters talking at the same time) and that helped tremendously. Try watching Kodocha subtitled, and I'm in hell. No way could I appreciate this series subtitled only as I did dubbed (and miss out on Laura Bailey's stellar performance as a hyperactive 11 year old). So, sell away. Find a series you can enjoy.

most people i know who prefer subs dont buy anime. |

if dubs were to ever disappear, i will be disappointed to a certain extent. dubs to me are a way to view, understand, and enjoy an anime with fast dialogue and fast subs. dubs to me helps in that i have less things to read when more than one text is on the screen. i'll probably spend less time collecting dvd and bluray and more time collecting figurines, toys, and manga.
