I'm a newbie to Manga....basically became interested in it when I saw some of my students at school reading this format.

I've looked around and found five titles that seem interesting at first glance and would like to know your opinions of each, or how you would rate them compared to each other.

I know that I could probably pick up the first book in each series, but as I've seen with comic books in the past, sometimes the first issue/book isn't a true reflection of the quality of the entire series.

The five titles I'm looking at are:

Fake

Chobits

Gravitation

GTO

Mars

Thanks for any opinions/comments/reviews you can send my way.

Fake- Light yaoi. My friend collected the whole series but all the kissing and stuff was weird. Not used to that. The last book is rated m...none of the others are though.

Chobits-This is a really good series. One of the best one's that CLAMP's ever done.

Gravitation- Light yaoi. Though this is yaoi and I don't usually read yaoi, this series is really good. I've only read the first book but I've seen the anime.

GTO-Never read this one.

Mars- This one is okay. I stopped after the fifth book and forgot all about it....good thing I didn't buy this series though. It gets boring after a while....I don't usually like the romance genre

The only one of those I read was GTO.

It is over the top, a little lewd, funny and serious in turns and very good, in fact much better then the Anime. Highly recomended.

All the best,

Out of those, I'm only collecting Gravitation.

It's a good, humorous title if you can stand the shonen-ai/yaoi. If you don't know what that means, it's two males in a relationship together.

Since you can read the summary on Tokyopop's site, I'll just say that I enjoy reading it, and the entire cast is entertaining. If you do try it out, don't judge it by the first book alone. The first is setting up the series, the second is where more things come into play.

First of all, I'd like to recommend you to visit the especific encyclopedia sites for these mangas. There you can see a general "rating" of a lot of users and may read something you don't know. Just take a look.

Fake-manga#2334

Chobits - manga#1553

Gravitation- manga#2333

GTO- manga#1557

Mars- manga#1567

And...Personal rating...Personally I think that the best are Gravitation and GTO. Since you said you have students, I guess you're not too younger. Chobits is quite funny but especially obsessed with "hot" things. Maybe if you want something more serious Mars will be the best.

Fake - Not read
Chobits - 6
Gravitation - 7
GTO - 8
Mars - Not read.

And...Wish you the best in this new world ^__^.

P.D: I'm having a problem and I can't put the links just next to the word. Can anyone put them just next to the word?? Thanks^^.

The only ones of the five that I've read are GTO and Chobits, so they are what I'll comment on:

GTO very good. Funny, entertaining, action packed with well-written characters. Best out of those five (or two in my case).

Chobits is good. The plot is kinda repetatitve, but the characters are well written, and a very good love story. CLAMP's art is spectacular as well.

Yes, take Sarki-kun's advice and look at the ratings for each title. That should give an idea.

The titles you've listed are really quite diverse. It's hard to "rank" because unless people know what genre you like, of course you can't really just go off rankings. You should probably read synopses on them or read reviews to see if they're to your liking.

FAKE - Shounen-ai. Last volume rated Mature because Dee and Ryo "consummate" their relationship. I like this one better than Gravitation because it had more of a story to it and seemed less slapstick and drawn out. It's more mature than Gravitation is...that's a good way of putting it.

Chobits - a great title that appeals to both guys and girls; crosses that gender line very well. The artwork is beautiful. Humor and storyline are well-balanced and you really feel for Hideki and Chii.

Gravitation - well...it's fun...for like five minutes. I've been jumped on for voicing my mediocre feelings for this title. It's so..."OMG I LOVE YOU *GLOMP* KISS ME..no don't KISS ME" that I just can't stand it for an extended period of time. Girls like seeing guys with guys...teasing their affections. Therein lies the appeal. There is a story, I think, but the annoying relationship between the two guys is the main thing.

GTO - GTO is gritty and real. Onizuka wants to be the best he can be and reading about his development as a person is pretty entertaining. I like it, but don't love it.

Mars - I remember that I loved it when I read it. I read it all in one big sitting. Kira and Rei's relationship was very "real" and dramatic. If you don't like angst, stay away because it's full of it. It gets a little slow in the middle volumes and has a bit of a cop-out ending, but it's a recommended series.

Fake-This is a cop story. I like the story, but usually in yaoi, the fact that they aren't straight distracts you from the story itself. That's how I feel about it.

Chobits-This is also a really good story. I'm not sure if it is actually shonen or shojo.

Gravitation-A rock star type story.

GTO-This is great!! It's about an unlikely teacher who starts out looking for high school girls, and ends up giving an actual education. Highly recommended. But it is quite vulgar.

Mars-I don't like this one as much. It's about an artist and a biker.

Watching how obssesionated Hideki is and Chii's behaviour...I'd say it's more shonen than shojo...

Not really...it seem that GTO is very good. Just look at the top 10 manga list. It might be more appealing to you if you're a guy though with all the echii stuff, but girls like it too for the lesson it teaches.

Personally, I thought it was dumb and didn't see what all the hype was about.

Well it's all personal. I can show GTO (manga/anime/Live action) to most guy who don't like anime and they love it.

I really think all those show with "Robot Girl" like Mahormantic, Hands Maid May, Steel Angel are all kinda dumb. They might be entertaining but the concept of robot having emotion, especially during perverted scene seem really stupid and not really logical. Those type of stories are harder to recommend to new anime viewer because they usually say "WTF, why is she embarrassed that the guy look up her skit if she's just a robot..". Chobit's not bad and GTO has a lot of crude jokes and adult humor so it can turn off a lot of sensitive people.

I'm a little bit confused about some of the comments about FAKE and Gravitation. Admittedly, Gravi's not exactly heavy reading material, but it's not total crap either.

FAKE: if you like yaoi, you should like FAKE. It's hilarious, sweet, and just fun. As far as I'm concerned, there's a little bit in it for everyone. Action, well, it's a cop story. How can there *not* be action? Romance, well, there's tons of it, both yaoi (in the form of Dee and Ryo) and not (in the form of Carol and Bikky). Humor, well, it's sprinkled liberally throughout.

Gravitation: again, yaoi, but *much* less explicit than FAKE (at least, the volumes I've read are). I find that a lot of the characters are a) caricatures and b) a little hard to tell apart, but I'm not a big Gravi fan. I give this one an overall "good," though, for cute storyline and good artwork, even if Shuichi annoys the hell out of me.

As far as the rest of them, I've been trying to get into GTO, but the stupid bookstores in my area usually won't carry any of the early volumes, and I'm not a fan of starting in the middle and heading on to the beginning. So, I haven't read any of it yet, but I've heard great comments and I'd like to get a chance to read a couple volumes. The other two, well, I can't say that I have a lot of interest in them. For what it's worth, there's my two cents.
