This has been addressed in an older ANN article: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-09-10/directors-dispute-reports-of-poor-animator-salaries Comparatively, sound directors and scriptwriters do very well, so there is huge income disparity in the industry. I can't remember the exact comparison, but I recall the pay structure being divided relatively evenly into such categories as animation, sound, script, and digitization. The problem is that the animation segment is labour intensive, so the money is allocated among numerous individuals. Highly skilled animators do decently, while the rest fight for scraps. On the other hand, there are comparatively few scriptwriters (who may even be entitled to royalties) and (in particular) sound directors, so working in anime is quite lucrative for them. |
