Well as others have already done, I'll just post what I said about it over in The Click thread:
I wrote: | Well the dub I thought was pretty good, heaven knows FAR better than the 4kids one, but then again it doesn't take much to be better than the 4kids dub now doesn't it? The episode itself was kind of meh, but then again I wasn't expecting too much to happen. I personally think it's too early to determine just how good this dub really is though. We'll have to wait until the more epic episodes to finally determine that. But right out of the gate I can already tell that Sonny Straight, Lucy Christiansen and Eric Vale are already stepping into each's characters quite well. Still too early for the others though, since they didn't get much of a chance in this one.
I was kind of surprised that they did an english translated version of the OP and ED songs though, that was a nice little transition there. Can't help but think though what the other ones that came before them would have sounded like though....... And horray for the original musical score! |

lol I liked that too.
Overall I was very happy with the new dub, I have nothing negative to say. For Sanji's voice though I was expecting him to sound like future Trunks but I am fine with his voice as is.

I'm curious, now--I missed the first ten minutes...what was the conversation like?

It went something like this:
Luffy: That was fun, but I don't think we should ever go back.
Nami: Fun? How could you call that fun? It was a graveyard
Luffy: Why can't a graveyard be fun? C'mon, live a little
Basically mocking 4Kids, it was awesome

And as for the 10pm comment...Saturday? Oh please. Not all parents would really care for that rule anyway. >.>; Some parents let their kids stay up as long as they want...but anyway, Toonami is still Toonami, and if it's a target set to a certain audience, young ones will watch. |
I think I said something qualifying & what I meant by Kids who wouldn't understand the change is kids under 10. Most kids 10 or over, I give vredit to having been aware of the controversy surrounding the voice change--that a new company took over the dub, so they can at least understand that, AN 8 yr okd mat still be young enough to believe Luffy & the gang are real like Micky & have their own voice, but I figure 10 yr olds understand it's actors.
I wasn't harsh on his opinions other than Sanji & Sanji... wasn't so bad as it's horrid if you've heard Hiroaki Hirata (& I have as Sha Gojyo & many other roles).
Did I complain on his Zoro opinion or just his bitch over the name being stupid? (which is actually an insult to hispanic culture & ZORRO, the Fox. Not that Zorro is actually Mexican--he's the creation of a SoCal writer, but he's still been around for years)
I pointed out he probably is just used to the 4Kids voices. I questioned his liking that cracking Ussop voice. Yeah, it was funny, but it was almost headache-inducing & one of those fake cartoon coices. My teen found it funny, but sort of an insult to the original VA who is obscenely good (My teen & I love Kappei Yamaguchi. He's so crazy on the Dead Leaves interviews. He also does the cutest little boy voice-yeah Daisaku! And he's L. And InuYasha.)
In fact the 4Kids cast was so much an insult to the original. In Japan they took the time to put some name talent into the cast. Krillin. Ranma. Pikachu. Buggy is Shigeru CHiba-Radtitz, Kuwabara. Arlong is Jyrouta Kosugi-Zenki, Zagato, Lantis. Bin Shimada, Takeshi Aono, Takeshi Kusao, Tomokazu Seki, Takehito Koyasu, Toshio Furukawa, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Yuji Ueda, Daisuke Gouri, Isshin Chiba, Jouji Yanami, Kenichi Ogata, Masaya Onosaka, Michie Tomizawa, Mika Doi, Nobuyuki Hiyama, Ryusei Nakao, Romi Paku, Satsuki Yukino, Ryotaro Okiayu, & Tomomichi Nishimura should be familiar to most Japanese anime viewers & anyone who watches the shows in Japanese. Point being, this isn't a title filled with unknown newb talent. Between Naruto & One Piece, I was pulling for One Piece to be brought over more than Naruto because the One Piece casting is so impressive (& I prefer the manga)

You do know that it is a mixture of 4Kids and Funimation VAs that are handling the dub, right?
o.o Under 10, huh?
xD Hmm...I have a 7 year old that only watches Nick and Disney...so I guess he doesn't count.

uh, no they aren't; Funi is in Texas and 4Kids is in New York so unless Funi is willing to go through some unnecessary headaches then all VAs from here on out WILL be Funi/ADV VAs

Humans are creatures of habit. You obviously got used to the other version. You'll get used to this, or you'll stop watching.

Yes, notice I said I would give this show more time before coming to an conclusion.

10PM? "Kids" who can't understand should be in bed. |
Saturday is the day kids 9-13 stay up later then normal. So they are apart of the demo for this show with the added consideration for the hardcore Anime fans. If not that then Adult Swim would start in that time-slot.

I thought the old voices were very dynamic (even Sanji). But, the worst of it was making Luffy female. i didn't even look at the new casting on ANN but man did that stick out. I thought that was a practice that died out a long time ago.

My notes say Erica Schroeder was Luffy for 4Kids.
Isn't that a gal?
And the original Japanese actress played Krillin as a kid as well as an adult & played Yajirobe in DBZ-Mayumi Tanaka- and yeah, she's a gal.
And in Japan Goku was played by a gal. Ed & Al-FMA are gals. Naruto's a gal. Get over it. It's fairly common for male leads in shonen anime to be played by gals--if you want guys played by guys, move over to shojo where we get a better percentage of guys voicing guys (or at least yaoi...) Some gals in Japan seem to voice guys far more than gals--I'm always surprized to run into Romi Paku playing a chick |
As I stated I didn't look at the Casting list, in that regard the sex of the actor didn't matter. As it shouldn't in these types of parts. To me Erica clearly played a much older teen and more masculine sounding voice(despite the lines). With a very energetic and dynamic feel that was to my taste. When compared to the latest incarnation he is lacking, only because he's to female sounding not because there's a female making those sounds. Luffy's recasting so far has been very striking to me and therefore an unnecessary "improvement" so far.

Sanji has to go back

No. As my husband would say, you need to get the peanut butter out of your ears. I think David Moo loves to be hated. Xellos was, at one time, the dub voice everyone pointed to when they said dubs suck. And then he does this. |
Well despite what your husband said or whatever is going on with you and your Moo drama. My point is that as an American and avid anime watcher with very little experence with the original Japanese voices Sanji as a character now feels very generic (Mr.Anime Character #5) if not out of place in this wacky pirate world. With only one episode in the bag this is how I feel. If (and I hope) there will be some strong character moments in the future for Sanji. Where this new voice plays off perfectly that'll likely be the point in time where I change my opinion. Until then, no.

Zoro(sucky name) voice has to go back
|
No SoCal hispanic culture for you. Never heard of Zoro? Seen the movies with Antonio Banderas? THe old TV show? Zoro (The fox) has been around for a few decades. Deeper than I expected, but Kazuya Nakai & Hiroaki Hirata have somewhat similar deliveries-noticably deeper than the rest of the crew so it works. Hirata's a bit mushier/slurred-sounding to my ears. |
Rant much? Yes, I know who Zorro is but Is Zolo wearing a mask, riding a horse, and/or speaking Spanglish. No, but would you like that? If not, then the connotations with Zoro/Zorro layered against the 4Kids name would be disruptive to any old to new viewers like myself.

Usopp okay, but the old voice was more dynamic

You liked the voice cracking? At least Sonny Strait sounds human. THe 4Kids version sounded so fake-like any time Usopp would reveal he was operating under cover & that was a fake voice. |
I like extreme highs and lows in zany characters. As Usopp was presented to me in the earlier 4Kids episodes he had a lot of zany moments. If they just got rid of all those stupid puns and let the character sound smart more the original voice could have worked just as well.IMO As an old and new viewer I would have enjoyed watching this character properly grow up.

Nami not bad but I prefer the old.
Chopper is GOD awful hearing that squeal voice coming out of the big Chopper was jaw dropping.

I never liked that 4Kids made that deep voice for big Chopper. Go watch Pokemon. Pikachu is Chopper. One can always tell Ikue Ohtani because at some point (often lots of points) her voice cracks like that "Pikachu" tone. I don't recall Big Chopper that well, but I don't think she makes any major change when it's big or small, but I don't honestly remember. |
I like the differences of aggressiveness in his tone with the changes in types. See to me it's a little more logical that a physiological change would alter the depth of sound in his vocal patterns(animal or not). I would have the same complaint no matter the language.

Also, maybe it's the pauses between each line, but there is no chemistry between the actors. Maybe the studio and actors need too work out some of the details get the engine humming. After all this only the first episode and I see potential. And, Funi is good at what they do. |
Because god knows Eric Vale (Trunks) & Chris Sabat (Vegeta) never, ever worked together. ANd they never worked with Sonny Strait (Krillin). |
Well, Miss my critique was more associated with the editing as apposed to the actors. If I'm not mistaken most voice actors perform in sound booths alone. With that limitation that'll make it the sound editor and director's job to maintain the pacing between the different actors lines and link delivers. Thereby placing my complaints squarely on their shoulders. However this is hard to surmise after one viewing of one episode that I almost feel asleep on from boredom.
However, really, truly and deeply great OP & ED bravo Funi I hope we get an album of the translated themes. Also l loved Robin she was the best part of the episode, overall.
